iPad I’m bad
Bottom Line – iPads, like our coaches and generators need to be used and run at capacity or they’ll break down.
The iPad screen in my bay started bulging about 6 months ago…the screen definitely had an outward curve to it. I thought it might be from the Florida heat in the bay.
Then my neighbor told me it was the battery going bad. He said take it into an iStore and they’ll probably replace it.
This particular iPad has been sitting on a magnetic LaunchPort charger and rarely gets used. It’s there to run our Bay A/V system. Since we built a Tiki Hut next to our coach in Florida with a 65″ TV, the bay TV and therefore Bay iPad doesn’t get used any more.
At they Apple store, they took off the LaunchPort frame and found the iPad was completely split apart from the damaged battery. Since the iPad was over a year old, they charged me the cost of a replacement battery @ $99, and gave me a new iPad.
His advice was to not leave the iPad on the charger 24-7. They like to be used so take it off the charger and let the battery wear down regularly.

Some guys with newer Marathons were popping screens too as you describe. I don’t know if you have the same stuff as we have but to fix this they told us to run all the Ipads in sleep mode.
After 10 mins it goes into sleep mode and I think the charge rate is different, don’t know if that will help you but no one else has had an issue.
On mine after 10 mins it goes to sleep and to activate you push 1 button and it comes up.
Are yours in sleep mode Jimmy? Could be the ticket.

On my coaches that had switches to do stuff, my switches never bulged or had to go to sleep.
I want to meet who thinks this stuff is progress.

It’s the Launchport Charger that is the problem, Jeff cautioned me against leaving on the charger long term. I turn the IPad off and put it to sleep when we aren’t using the bus and it retains it’s charge without needing the Launchport.

But at least to make it play all I have to do is push a button. And it is always asleep until I push that button.

And nobody will ever catch me spending my day either staring at my flip phone, checking to see who is calling, or sending someone to voice mail Hell.
I get a kick out of the national wailing about opiod addiction, when apparently the wizards fail to recognize we are a nation of people who haven’t been able to put their phones down, or better off, turn them off. Ain’t technology great how it runs the lives of people????????

I had 2 ipad minis go out at the same time.. screen bulging… I took them to the Apple Store and they were great… replaced them both for the price of new batteries..$100 a piece if I recall correctly.. they told me to replace the batteries every two years and that the launchport wasn’t the problem.. just if they are turned on all the time the batteries should be replaced every two years.

That is good to know. We had one that swelled and had to replace the battery. (correction….the whole I-pad was replaced).
Today, I took both I-pads off of the launch port while we are stationary.

My Apple guy said that keeping it on charge all the time was the problem. He blamed it on the Launchport. Don’t keep it on the Launchport 24-7 for months at a time.

Be aware if the screen breaks from bulging there is no value for replacement

It seems like there’s a lot more “Bulging” going on around here than just iPads!

We keep the iPads on the LaunchPads with the LaunchPads unplugged. When the iPads drop to 20% charge we plug in the LaunchPads until the iPads are charged and then store the charger cord until the next charge.
But, Jon gets more exercise ’cause he gets up and down to turn the dial.

Our iPads (2018) never get hot when they are left on the Launchport. The only time they get warm is when they are significantly discharged and then go on the Launchport for an extended time to get recharged.
Two things come to mind. One is that maybe the newer iPads have an improved charging controller. It could be hardware or software controlled.
The second is that if Apple has improved their charging algorithm, the changes could have been included in system update downloads. We check for software and system updates every 3-4 months or just before planned trips. There have been several updates since we had the iPad upgrade last year.
It might be worth checking.

Les, do your I-pads require a pass-code to open once they go to ‘sleep’?
