Inverter switching
Posted by Steve on November 1, 2012 at 7:04 pmI have friend who has a 06 country coach conversion, she said when she disconnected the shore power the inverters shut off, any tips on what to look for? I’ll be seeing it tomorrow night, I’m told the inverters lights are on when pluged in.

When the inverters see shore power they are not inverters, but battery chargers. The power going to them passes through them to the circuits that they power when inverting, and the power to them is also being used to charge the batteries.
When shore power is disconnected the inverters stop charging the batteries, and instead draw power from the batteries, change it to 120 volt AC and send that power to the circuits they are connected to such as the refrigerator or TV.
There is not enough information to begin to suggest what might be wrong, if in fact there is anything wrong. Are the inverters turned on? Are there any switches in the coach that need to be on for them to function? Did they work previously, and if so did anyone do anything that might have stopped them from functioning? It is highly unlikely two inverters decide to quit working simultaneously.

that’s what i was thinking that they be turned off or there is a swithch to go from Ac to inverting, this is a firend and she lost her husband last Janurary, i have the Vantare with the air leak. the country coach is set up a lettle differnt than mine, i’ll see it tonight but i’m sure it’s something simple, like an on off switch.
thank you

if the coach has not been maintained there is a good chance that the house bank is shot. The inverters will shut down if the house bank cannot carry a load and drops below 22V or so. A quick way to find out is to check house bank voltage.
Another thing to check. My inverters can also be in “charge only” vs. “invert” mode. Some people use that mode to ensure the inverter does not run down the house bank should shore power go out.

As a Vantare owner it is important to understand your coach is set up unlike almost any other coversion. Everything runs through your inverters. Most other coaches have specific circuits set up for inverter power and the rest require shore or generator power. So be cautious when making assumptions about what you might find on a Country Coach. Not saying you are wrong or headed in the wrong direction, just asking you to understand what may be typical of your coach is not likely on hers.
Gerald is right in the respect if the batteries are shot and the failure is extreme it may appear to be an inverter problem. With shore or generator power to the inverters check the voltage of the house bank (it could be 12 or 24 volts depending on how CC set them up), then remove charging power and see what they show. After a surface charge has bled off they should sit at 12.8 or 25.6 or thereabouts. The coach should have a DC voltage meter, but if not a good multimeter will give you the answer. Or it could be a switch was turned off.

I found one of the inverters was not in standby mode so when I changed that and unplugged the shore it switched to inverting,
thanks for the help
