Internet Service while full-timing
John and I are having the great debate about whether to hit the road full time in the bus after this school year (I’m a teacher) or wait until after the 2014/2015 school year. In any case, one of the things we know we will need to solve is internet access. I know that many parks have internet, but it’s not always reliable so we currently have a hotspot through our cell service (Sprint) that we use when we’re on the road. It’s fine for the trips we make during school vacations, but because I do web programming & graphics on the side, I feel like it would be too expensive to use when we’re full time because of the amount of data usage I would have. Does anyone have a different solution to the internet service while on the road? We do have Direct TV at home and in the bus . . . that would continue in the bus but stop at home. I’m not sure if they have some sort of mobile internet deal. Advice? 🙂

We are Verizon customers have both phones and our mifi with them for Internet. I’m a software consultant so I’m online all the time. We have not been without access. Now, we also don’t attempt access in remote areas such as national parks as we do to want access then, it’s vacatin!
One friend has a sprint phone and also a Verizon phone to make sure he has coverage. Not sure I would go that far. Any Starbucks will have Internet access if you can’t get it from your mifi.
And yes, retire now and fulltime!

If you need a lot of GB’s per month it can get expensive. For 20GB or less it seems that most full timers recommend this:

Ditto on Millenicon. We have been using it since January and it solved most of our connectivity issues. They resell several major providers but their verizon is the best deal. 20 Gig for $70 or you can pay verizon $70 for 5 Gig with the same device. They offer an unlimited Sprint plan but I will let Technomadia explain whey that is not the best deal.
I have no stake in Millenicon at all but I am a satisfied customer. Well, as satisfied as I can be with anything electronic.

I am still working but out on an extended trip with the family and we are using a Verizon 4g mifi. I have a wilson electronic signal booster that marathon is installing perminately on the roof this week in FL. We have been on the road for just about 4 months now and I have been to 2 parks/resorts where the campground wifi was acceptable for my use… so I pretty much use the mifi everywhere we go including down the road. We have been to some pretty remote spots but with signal booster we have not been without 4G service yet. I have the 50 gig share everything plan and it’s been great for us.

We retired and spent nearly 10 years as full-timers. We used a Verizon air card in a Cradlepoint wireless router for internet service throughout the coach.
Never a problem.

Millenicom x3…………..we’ve been using it for a year now, no problems, excellent signal everywhere. I even use it at home. $70/mo. Do NOT get the Sprint unlimited deal, get the Verizon deal, it is unlimited also but they do not call it that.

- Cathy… you say you have a Hotspot with Sprint… I don’t know what your limits are with that but if you have been with Sprint a long time you might check and see if its “unlimited”… they won’t tell you unless you ask them. I have a Sprint 3G unlimited data service plan with them that I value with my life… We have a Wilson amp and wireless antenna inside the bus and a Wilson antenna on top of the bus and it works great… the amp has adjustable gain on it. The 3G is still working well everywhere so far and I will not upgrade until I have to because at that point I will lose my “unlimited” status.
- We switched to AT&T years ago so we could have iphones but I kept my data card with Sprint only because it was “unlimited”.
