  • Instrument cluster failure

Posted by Allan on October 4, 2016 at 10:56 am

In addition to a hydraulic hose failure mentioned in a separate thread, my instrument cluster failed on the way back home to Canada. All analogue gauges and digital display failed, with the exception of the air gauges which are non electric. So the Prevost shop analyzed the problem and concluded that I required a new cluster…..they tried to get the original cluster to work. They in turn installed a new cluster. So all is well with the exception of the fuel guage which shows a full tank when I turn on the ignition. I know for sure I have just over a half tank of diesel. The Prevost shop asked me to take the coach home and use it to determine if this guage normalized. After 40 miles of driving the fuel guage still shows full. I should also mention that when I turn off the ignition the fuel guage reads empty? So any ideas as to why this guage is not working?

PS….I have no complaints with the Prevost Richmond shop. They had my coach for over a month in one of their bays and had the coach plugged in and kept me informed as to progress. Just would like to resolve this minor glitch.

Peter: Not sure that’s correct with his coach. My coach (#440) has the XLII style instruments…guessing his are same. I think my fuel gauge goes wherever it wants with key off. Thinking yhis problem will ‘fix itself’ is ludicrous.

I think his has the XLll style dash not the old ones, if it does it will read empty with key off but he might have the old style dash , mine with key off will read empty and as soon as I turn key on it goes to what ever level the fuel tank is at

The cluster is an XLII type unit. I suspect, without any knowledge of how the fuel guage works, is that the guage is faulty or there is a wiring issue or the sending unit in the fuel tank has crapped out…..or any or all of the above. Just wondered if anyone else in the Prevost community experienced a similar issue.

I would check the back of the gauges just to make sure all the wires are on tight , anytime work is done go back to that spot and double check things there are lots of wires back in the dash somebody might have bumped a wire or plug a little loose
