  • Inner drive wheel stuck on

Posted by Andrew on April 24, 2022 at 11:50 am

Wondering if anyone has any tips on getting the inner drive wheel to pop off. Mine is wedged on there pretty good.

When I brought my bus home is 2020, the last time the tires were removed was 2003. My Inner drives were fused to the brake drums, so much that I had to use an orbital sander to remove the corrosion on the wheel and drum faces. What i did is get a long pry bar, and with the axle supported, i put the prybar under the tire at the 6:00 position and lifted the pry bar up while spinning the wheel, it took like 3 revolutions and it finally broke free.

You have to take the lug nuts off

You need a square socket for those.

Well that makes a lot more sense . I thought the outer lug nuts were it. Anyway, I ended up not needing to take it off, as I was able to get to an air fitting I needed to replace with just the one wheel off. Thanks for the help!

I thought the same thing the first time I took my outers off.

You have stud piloted wheels with bud nuts that require a bud socket. New buses have hub piloted wheels with normal lug nuts.

You need a “bud” socket: 1/1/2″ x 13/16″ in whatever drive size (1″ or 3/4″) you use.
The outer nut comes off with the 1 1/2″ hex. The inner comes of with the 13/16″ square drive which is deeper in the same socket.
    NAPA, amazon, etc.
