Inertia starter … would it work on a DD?
Posted by Dick on November 3, 2015 at 8:48 pmThis short video about an inertia starter used on a tank got me thinking. Could this work on our DDs? Would this start an 8V92 or Series 60 when the chassis batteries were dead and then rely on the engine alternator to charge the chassis batteries?

While saving money on batteries might seem to be an attractive justification, I would be afraid of breaking a nail.
You would have to do that before taking a shower because you are going to work up a sweat.

I guess you boys have never started a Old John Deere Tractor. Worked every time.

you still need 11.6Volts for the ddec to function. Below that you have no fuel. FWIW

Glen’s,
I have cranked my share of 2cyl John Deere’s in my day. Problem is, I don’t think Detroit makes a S-60 with 6 pet cocks!!Steve

Speaking of thread creep……..I prefer my two cylinder John Deere with electric start!

Alvie,
That is sweet!! I don’t think I am quite enough man to hand crank that old girl. The ring gear around that flyweel is hard on the hands. I had a 70 diesel with a pony motor and my 730 diesel had electric start but looked like hell beside that beauty!! All are gone now except for the 1934 R. It belonged to a neighbor since 1940. He passed away and his son traded it to me for a furnace…. Hope to get her done one day. For now seems like I have a 45,000 pound 45′ long project that has been keeping me busy!!Steve

Thanks guys for your comments! It took quite some time, busted knuckles and a little bit of money to get it looking good.
