  • In search of fan belt cover

Posted by Rick on February 28, 2022 at 12:37 pm

I am looking for the cover that goes over the big fan belt pulley on an 8V92. You know the pulley bearing that you grease and then the grease flies all over the engine compartment? The one that is on the end of the shaft that goes to the Boston Gear box? I have seen it in the diagrams, but mine either did not have one originally or it is missing.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

Does this keep grease from flying all over the place?

What keeps grease from flying all over is modest use of the grease gun.

On our coach I gave it a single shot of grease. It was a very slight amount which was about 1/2 to 3/4 of a full stroke of a hand grease gun. Anything more than that grease was flying all over the place.

I drove the bus 210,000 miles with no issues using that amount every 5000 miles.

I had one and liked it. Mine was mounted on the engine compartment door so that it functioned when the door was closed but exposed the belts when the door was open.

Thanks guys. I like the idea of having one on the door. Maybe I will make one…

My ’88 had a cover on the door as well. Guess I thought it was standard Prevost but maybe it was a CC thing. You might want to check with CC in Junction City (or whoever is running that these days) to see if they still have that part or a source for it.

You could also try http://oregonmotorcoachcenter.com/ as they also have a lot of the original CC build sheets and specifications.

Silly me. I always was under the impression covers over belts were to protect people who are monkeying around in the engine area with the engine running. A cover would provide protection against serious injury or death.

But you guys seem to think its only purpose is to catch grease flung from an over greased pulley which is why it is on the door.

    I learn something every day.

Why monkey around in the engine compartment when the engine is running? This sounds like a seriously bad idea to me!

The other purpose I have for my cover is it gives me a comfy place to lean when i am adding oil to my fan gear box.

If one of you guys who has a belt cover mounted to the door could send a picture, I would really appreciate it. I am spending over a year of my life on the 8v92 major overhaul and making the engine and engine bay all pretty with shiny new paint. I really don’t want grease flying all over the place.

Take your time…the snow is still flying in Michigan and my bus barn is not built yet.

Bill, apparently you are one of the lucky ones who never has to open the engine doors with the motor running or have a mechanic who is at risk when he has to do some service work with the engine running.

There are numerous reasons to have the motor running while doing something with the engine running.

Oh I get why you would open the back door with the engine running. That’s about it for me! I look, I decide what I might want to work on, I shut off the engine and then I do that work. I start it back up again and see if what I tried to do worked. I don’t know, to me, and me alone, it’s like going under the bus without the proper supports if you need to stick any part of your body into the engine compartment with the engine running. Don’t take any offense, it’s just me any my love for my extremities.

I don’t think the belt cover has saved any lives but I can confirm it does keep the grease off the engine.

Just to set the record straight my last two Liberty coaches had a large cover over all the belts so a running engine posed no risk, and I removed them because with them in place there was no way to do a pre-trip inspection. I now have an engine compartment that is dangerous when the engine is running. Since I am usually the only person that will work in that area I take great pains to avoid loose clothing from getting caught in the belts of a running engine.

My 87 Liberty with the 8V92 had no belt covers and far more than my Series 60 coaches found me having to do work there with the engine running.

And even with my pit providing me relative safety when I am beneath the coach, I still will not go under it unless the chassis is supported on stands. I hate risks, but sometimes I have no choice except to be extra careful.

I finally finished my Grease Slinger cover for my Old style Fan drive. Pictures to follow once the sun goes beyond the back of my bus.
