Idlers on the DDS60

An idler pulley is a non-driven pulley over which a belt rides.
If you relax your belts you can rotate the small pulleys between the pulley on the engine that drives the belt and the device being driven. There are idler pulleys on all your belts and those pulleys should rotate freely without any rough feeling or noise. If they don’t rotate smoothly or without noise the bearings should be replaced.
Your alternator belt can be relaxed by sticking a 1/2″ drive socket wrench or bar in the belt tensioner and rotating it. The other belts can be relaxed with the air valve at the top center of the engine bay.

Like everything else I do…… I have to make it into an even bigger project. I wondered how in the hell the front of the motor could get that much corrosion on it. The aluminum gear covers on the front were completly covered with corrosion. So I guess I will just clean it up good before I put the idlers and belts back on it..

Steve did you replace the old belt tensioner with the update auto belt tensioner nows a good time to do it when it’s all apart, Nice job

What you have done is the equivalent of opening Pandora’s box. I hope you now realize you have to polish the aluminum valve cover, polish the copper coolant line connections, paint the harmonic balancer and all pulleys, etc.

When I thought about that I had already bought the new bearings and had them pressed in. If I ever have to change the bearings again, I will probably would do it. I am going to use my belt tentioner guage and hope for the best.

Another project in the books, idlers & belts “check”. Just a little pressure washing down on the bottom side and this one is done !
