  • I may have entered into “Flip-Phone-Friday”?

Posted by Harry on January 11, 2019 at 7:58 pm

I had a problem with 50 amp service that I posted a couple months ago. In short I took my bus to an RV park for winter storage where I have 50 amp service. The first site they put me into the DC side of the 50 amp worked but not the AC side. They then put me into the next site over and there I had the AC side but not the DC side. I thought that was strange but was told it could be my 50 amp cord. The AC side was the most important to me so I could run the heaters. The park told me a short time later that they had an electrician check the power pole and it had full 50 amp service. I’ve been over to the coach five times since I took the coach there on November 1st and the power situation was the same every time… Lights in the salon and on the Convection/Microwave and that’s it.

Today I go over to the bus and low and behold everything works… Both the AC and DC side! I went to the park office to see if any electrical work had been done to the area where my bus is and was told no. What the heck? It con only be magic. I really have to look into a Flip Phone, Jon my just be on the leading edge there…

I think that there is some electrical misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the power pole situation. There are 2 legs of AC current at the 50 amp connection that you plug your cord into. There is NO DC current at the 50 amp power outlet going to your 50 amp cord. Maybe there is a battery/inverter/converter problem that needs to looked into? Folks smarter than me will likely chime in for a better explanation.

Hi Tim, I think I could have explained it better. I didn’t mean the power pole has a DC side. I only meant that was the effect on my bus.

Sounds like your inverter/charger brought your house batteries back to life.

The inverter is what turns the DC to AC through battery bank to runs ac goodies. I have and think you do also have DC goodies in coach or mine does through another panel. Have 2 (ac and dc panels) in mine. Maybe the Inverter woke up on its on or did you hit it with a hammer??

When I bought my coach the owner said “make sure when your coach is not in use, turn off your coach and house batteries”. Now I’ve heard it said that the house inverter/batteries should be left on when plugged into 50 amp shore power. What is right?

Asked another way, will my house batteries charge with the inverter off and plugged into 50 amp service?

And Glen what’s that about a hammer? Ohhhh you’ve seen my work!

Don’t know Harry about your coach but my magnum inverter has a charger built in and leave charger on all the time. Kill inverter when plugged into pole charger on. Just have the one in mine. Turn it on (push magnum monitor button) right before I unplug and hit the road so AC stuff is up, ie, fridge, tv and the like. Before I replaced it had a stand alone charger and inverter. Don’t remember the brand but it quit and installed this one about 5 or 6 years ago. Hope you get the puppy figured out. If not, there’s always a Bandit waiting to help you.

Hey Glen, Both the guys who played in Smokey and the Bandit are both dead. Is there something you’re trying to tell me?

No just a local rv shop Bandit that says he knows conversion coaches.

You really should turn off your inverters “invert” option if you are going to be parked with power and away from the coach for a long period. Should the coach lose power the inverter will kick in and kill your batteries with enough time. If you have carefully shut down anything that might draw AC power this might not be too big of a concern but if you keep your fridge running the batteries will be dead. Turning off the “invert” option of an inverter has no effect on the battery charging.

Glen, You just want me to come there so you can show off your new Prevost garage.

Bill, If I’m not staying in the bus, everything that draws power is turned off. If there is power usage that effect the batters it’s from a phantom source. I’m glad to know the batteries will charge with the inverter turned off or on.

Harry, I assume my Magnum inverter in on (just have 1 on my old coach) but just set in charge mode. Inverter light is off on monitor, battery charge light is on. Don’t remember what you have.

Is that Powermax your charger? Looks like it’s plugged in the 110 ac in left hand corner. The Nex is your inverter. Just (2) 110 plugs out bottom. They aren’t running much. As long as hooked to pole you ought to be charging. What does inverter power? Lights, maybe fridge and what else? Inquiring minds would like to know.cool Cruiseair looks easy to charge. Where’s the other 2 or 3?

Sheesh Harry, who’s on first? I thought you were talking about house inverter/chargers and house batteries, now the picture appears to be the chassis side with an inverter and separate charger. What’s the function of that inverter? I’m really confused.

Seems like a good spot for his Vanners. Mine are all in the engine compartment on back firewall above motor in the elements.
