  • Hwy 50 and Monarch pass in Colorado

Posted by Archived on May 16, 2019 at 10:19 pm

i was considering going across hwy 50 on our summer excursion from Oklahoma to Oregon. It looks like Monarch pass has the most topography on that route. Is this a road to consider in a Prevost?

We drive Hwy 50 west of Pueblo many times each yr pulling our toad or enclosed trailer. It’s ok. It’s winds along the Arkansas river too, sometimes as slow as 30 mph. Not my favorite hwy because I’ve been there and done that many times. The first time or two it was pretty cool.

Why 50 west of Salida is a good road. It will be slow up and slow down. We’ve done a number of times with a Sprinter Van towing a 29 ft Airstream. Then from west side of Monarch you’ll cruise into Gunnison. Westward traveling the shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir is good road too ( Hopefully the reservoir is in better shape, water level, than last. You then tuck into a potion of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Some road construction many be present left over from last year. There are some short grades then levels out heading west to Montrose. Leaving Montrose heading to Grand Junction, elevation wise isn’t too exciting. Pretty countryside, but gently rolling geography

We made Monarch Pass in a 1959 GM 4104 bus conversion. Granted, it was slow going and we disconnected the toad, but should not be a problem with a Prevost.

Don’t know where in Oklahoma you will be but it would almost make better time by going to Salina Kansas and go across on I70 to Denver then north on I25 to Cheyenne and West on I80 all the way to Salt Lake.

There are no mountain passes that way.

Hwy 50 can be a real night mare as far as traffic and speed especially in the summer. You get behind a travel trailer and you’ll be going 30 or 40 for miles.

Very winding road and above the river a lot with no shoulder.

Beautiful drive if you have all day.

Thanks for the info everyone. We are in SW Oklahoma about 3.5 hrs southeast of Amarillo. We usually join I 25 at Raton and then north in the summer and then take a southerly route on I 40 home in the fall.

All roads from our area to Newport, Or. seem to go through Salt Lake. I thought about going to Albuquerque then north on I 25, then to NM 550 to Moab Ut. Anyone been on that one?

P.S. Should have mentioned that we topped Monarch Pass when there was no snow on the roadway. The Great Google advises it was snowing there today.

I’ve yet to meet a mountain pass that is posted as a truck route that a prevost hauling a 25′ trailer loaded down with additional 12k lbs, can’t make.

I’ve run monarch from the east into gunnison. Was fine. Kept running from gunnison into Utah with no issues.

Take it slow, keep off the brakes and you will be fine.
