  • HWH : Aux Air : Royale XLV

Posted by Clint on July 10, 2023 at 11:17 am

First Prevost, so how does HWH and aux air work together? Conceptually (when the coach has been leveled with HWH) does HWH wake up and (if needed) manipulate the the 5 solenoids that are part of the Level Low system – along with providing source air from the aux compressor?

I’ve yet to get my bus to stay level using this method for more than a day or so. But also, I have yet to verify that my aux air compressor is coming on – it’s so darn quiet. Two years ago prior owner installed Silent Air TC-50 for aux air which has it’s own tank, regulator with gauge, and water separator. This is located on PS Bay 4 above the AH.

The gauge is generally always at 100 PSI. The belts are always tight, generator bags tight. I can force the compressor on by opening it’s tank drain. So yes it does work. I just don’t know how to verify if it works with HWH.

Additionally I still have another compressor in the drivers side front compartment. Someone mentioned that it might have been for a air toilet that was removed, but I swear I heard it come on the other day. On a Royale XLV where was the original aux air compressor?

Inside I have only a air seat and step well cover.

Bags, norgrens, brake chambers, brake relays, brake hoses – all new.

What I have found is that the HWH system will get you level and then if you leave it on, all it does is let air out of the bags to get you level again. As time goes by you will have empty bags all around and you have to air ip the bus (and bags) and start all over again. I found that using the HWH to get level and then turn it off works best for me.

Bill, are you saying your bus repeats the auto level process each time it thinks it is not level anymore? meaning back to ride height, then dump, then refill the bags? Mine does not seem to behave that way.

The original aux air compressor was a Jun-Aire located where your current one is.

The HWH leveling, when in the level mode, comes on on a internal timer check for level and makes adjustments as needed to re level if needed. Then goes back to sleep until the next wake up comes. It uses air from the aux system to add air if needed.

The one below the driver may have been for a toilet that was removed.

    Hope this helps.

My bus stays level for a while so i cheated and used a bottle jack to slowly lift a corner, and voila it started dumping the air from that corner bag. I let the jack down and it started to fill the bag without disturbing any of the other 3 corners. I repeated this jacking up and letting down on the other 3 corners and determined my bus will make small adjustments as needed to keep the bus level. I also did not see any behavior that told me it was doing a full dump reset then refilling.

No, I am saying the HWH system pretty much sucks and it can do it let air out of the air bags. You use it initially to get the coach level but you then MUST turn it off. If you do not, the sensor will see that you have gone out of level and let air out of the bags necessary to get level. Later it will again see you are out of level and let air out of the bags necessary to get level. On and on again. Eventually, you will have no air left in any bag to exhaust and you will just be sitting on the air bags stops and the coach will be exactly as level as the ground it’s sitting on.

The only cure is to stop ALL of the leaks related to your suspension. It only took about 20 years to get all of my air leaks resolves and the coach would hold level for weeks on end. Unfortunately, that was also about the time I sold the coach and the new coach has multiple leaks I have yet to resolve. This game sucks!

I love my Auto Level system, we just got back from a 2K mile road trip with another couple, they have a class A with Leveling jacks, nothing better that parking, flipping the switch and it levels itself. Very nice feature in these busses. There was one spot that was a bit out of reach for the air bag travel so I moved the bus over about 2 feet and it was happy.

On initial level I’ve observed mine let air out until the bubble level was perfect, and then at the last minute the compressor under the drivers seat comes on and raises the front just a smidge … which is evident in the bubble level as it’s no longer perfect. No idea why it does this – but I’ve observed it do the same thing multiple times, because I had to re-level several times in the same exact spot over the past two weeks.

After the initial level, with HWH on, it seems to only release air to re-level until level can no longer be achieved by releasing air, and at that point the compressor under the drivers seat comes on for like 5 – 7 secs, gives up and excess slope light come on. At that point, I air up the bus and start all over.

Again, I’ve never heard the Silent Air aux compressor that is in PS Bay 4 above the AH come on to assist with leveling the bus.

I know I have a leak in the PS rear. I know when I fix that I should be able to level with LL and leave it (no HWH). I’ll get it fixed, just haven’t had time to track it down yet.

But why I have two aux air compressors is a real head scratcher.

@Mike regarding your testing with a jack, when your bus adds air does it pull from the accessory air tank or immediately turn on the aux air compressor?

It uses air like it normally would pulling from the Aux supply. If my tank was at zero i wouldn’t have any leveling going on but i would not be at zero because my aux compressor would have kicked in at like 100 PSI. My Aux compressor is only turned on and off whether or not I have air pressure in between 100 and 120 psi. If my aux compressor is off and the engine is off, the Auto Level will do what it can with the air supply it has. The front is where folks usually need higher PSI to lift the front end up.
