How to Install New HeadHunter Water Pump?
Good Morning – I ordered a replacement HeadHunter Mach 5 water pump as “preventative” maintenance as do not want to be out on the road, have a failure and then do without water while awaiting shipment of a replacement.
I am actually debating whether or not to continue to use the existing Mach 5 and leave the new pump un-opened and will do so if replacement is as simple as unscrewing the two large 1″ couplers? It appears to be that simple – other than the power cord, is that process? (loosening the two fittings in the photo?)

That is all it takes. Unscrew the two pieces and screw them into the new one. There is a check valves behind the caps.

I think that’s a bit of oversimplification, but I, too, carry a spare.
Those couplings in your photos are not swivel couplings…they unscrew but not sure how far back you have to go in the plumbing to get them off. You also have 4 mounting bolts on base and, most important, you will probably find you have a different plug end on the cord of the new versus your existing pump. If that’s the case, have it changed in advance.

I don’t think there is a single answer to what is involved in swapping pumps because it all depends on how far back in the plumbing you have to go to get the flex or separation needed to get the attach points clear of the pump. Joel is right and in some cases where flex tubing is used it could be easy, but where hard piping like copper or steel or ABS plastic is used it could get very involved.

My recommendation would be to install a couple of plumbing union’s. One for the intake and one for the output lines. If you don’t already have a quick disconnect of some sort. I have changed my pump out several times and it makes it a lot easier/quicker.

I actually have a couple short sections of hose with clamps on mine.
