  • how does aux air work and what psi?

Posted by Archived on July 11, 2023 at 9:19 am

My coach had an aux air compressor but was removed before i bought it. I’m installing a Makita mac210q 2gal which fits almost perfectly in bay2 (pics to come). I don’t think I have anything running on aux air other than airbags for leveling.

I was under the assumption that the L/R tanks and acc air tanks valve opens at 90 and they should be at 120 at normal operation. But it appears that the L/R tanks open at 90 to fill the acc only and the acc doesn’t ever fill the L/R tanks.

    So here’s my questions

Is this correct, so if my acc air is at 120 then my L/R and airbags can be at 0?

What PSI should I set my compressor at? On at 100 then set 2 regulators at 125?

The airbags are on ACC air right? Just don’t level unless key is on?

Its sounding like i might not even need the compressor or maybe get one without a tank since its not really helpful. I mainly do day/weekend trips so really want the bus to be aired up all the time ready to move. Once a month I leave a CG at like 5am on a saturday and don’t like having to wait a few minutes to leave as its a loud diesel engine and people are sleeping. At least if the tanks were aired up I’ll be gone in a few seconds.

Lot’s going on here, see in Bold:

Mike: Yes technically that is correct. And the opposite, your brake system can be at zero and your Aux air can be at 120.

What PSI should I set my compressor at? On at 100 then set 2 regulators at 125?

Mike: Mine cycles between 100 and 120

Mike: Yes, or if you level via the Converter leveling system like HWH.

Its sounding like i might not even need the compressor or maybe get one without a tank since its not really helpful.

Mike: It is helpful if you have leaks. Also Some busses need air to operate the pocket doors and toilets.

Mike: It is 100% up to you but i think some will disagree with just starting the bus cold and just taking off is a good idea? For me, i leave early sometimes too, and to be honest i don’t think most folks would even care.

My ole 96 Liberty uses aux air for:engine belt tensioners/airbags
    2) air suspension and leveling
    3) main cabin door lock
    4) bathroom pocket door(s)
    5) stair well sliding cover
    6) front shutters/louvers
    7) genny airbags
    8) some folks have an air toilet

    9) drivers seat

    10) air horns & train horns

I keep the the cut-in/cut-out pressures set at 30psi/50psi.

When the Detroit is not running those pressures are plenty for our needs. Our airbags don’t leak/lean.

If the engine driven compressor were to fail I can turn up the aux compressor pressure to get us down the road for repair.

Thanks for the info. I forgot about my valid slide air seals which will definitely help having aux air.

Mike, the opposite is the same example I displayed. I’m thinking they don’t want aux air going into the l/r brake because it might not be as dry or clean which makes sense.

When I bought the bus I had a aux air valve leaking bad then my engine air hose popped off the engine. I replaced the aux air valve and the engine hose is using a cheap hose clamp that leaks but I have a high quality one getting delivered today so I haven’t had a solid air system until now and can finally fix the little leaks. I Think my l/r air system is pretty good and can last 24 hours without getting the low air light which is good enough for me. Yesterday the aux compressor was kicking on every hour and this am it was off and very low so have some aux air leaks to track.

I agree cold leaving is bad but sometimes we’ll pull in at midnight then out at 5am so I feel bad. In the winter it wasn’t an issue since CGs were pretty bare and we could easily pick the best spot (or even 2 spots). But now CGs are packed and last time the guy in front of us had a popup camper and I felt horrible. Usually we just pull out of our spot and on to the main road away from everyone and sit for a few and/or will idle through the campground. I figured the engine isn’t working that much harder idling pushing the bus vs in neutral.

Does HWH or other levelers work with the key off?

So far my aux air seems to be for

    engine belt tensioners/airbags
    air suspension/leveling
    slide seals
    maybe drivers seat

I don’t have an air horn but planning a train horn or something. the main cabin door unlocks but doesn’t lock which I need to investigate but I don’t think thats air. Wish i had genny airbags, air doors and some staircover.

appreciate all the info, seems I should cut my regulators down to 50 or so

Yes, my Auto level is part of the Converter so key is not required to be on. House batteries need to be on of course.
