  • House Battery Changeout

Posted by Archived on June 28, 2012 at 4:27 pm

I know much has been written about house batteries and the importance of a good maintenance program. But, I can now speak first hand from experience. I had the unfortunate experience last year of discharging my batteries while our coach was awaiting parts at a local service facility. I simply had failed to turn the inverters off and flip the master switch so the coach sat for two weeks as such. This error finally caught up with me last week in that the three year old Lifeline batteries died a quick and untimely death. My friend Tom Chilcote came to my rescue and within a matter of two days had new Lifelines delivered and ready for installation. I cannot say enough good things about his quick response, fast delivery, and excellent pricing. I highly recommend Tom and his company as a source for Lifeline Batteries. Thanks very much Tom!

I wanted to share this with the Community members and to reinforce my commitment of getting into the compartment to check the physical condition of my new batteries more often. Something I have only done a couple of times since we got the coach! The pictures sort of tell the whole story.

Thanks for the atta boy Tom, but I sure hated to see them fail. In case folks are wondering, this is what happens when the batteries are subjected to deep almost dead (3v) discharges on several occasions. Even though they are only 3 years old, they were toast.

I hate that it happened, since I owned the bus and put the batteries in new. They are really hard to get at on the Liberty’s, but it’s a maintenance item that needs attention at least a couple times a year. I’ll bet Tom will be sticking his nose in that compartment on a regular basis…

    PS – Nice LED lights….

Whenever I do maint. on the batteries, I clean all the connections and when I re-install the batteries, I give them all a liberal coating of bearing grease (or some other suitable heavy duty grease) and this will in turn, slow down corrosion if not stop it completely.

It aint all that neat and sanitary, but it works.
