  • House batteries 97 liberty xl – need guidence

Posted by Isaiah on April 27, 2023 at 6:17 am

Ok, so I pulled my batteries since they were 5 years old and they wouldnt keep charge when unplugged. My bus had 3 batteries, when I pulled the 3 I thought the prior owner just didnt install the 4th. So I bought a 4th battery. The battery trays have space for 4 batteries but when I went to install the 4th battery the welded tab made me understand that they never had a 4th battery in the bus. So I pulled out the grinder and cut off the mounting tab that was preventing me from installing the 4th battery.

I hooked up the 3 batteries the way that they came out. Here is my question

How do I add this 4th battery to my battery bank?

I know you have a 45′ Liberty XL 12v Classic

Hook Negative to negative and positive to positive for the 4th battery to the 3rd battery below it.

The passenger side engine door should have the diagram for the battery cables. If not I am sure it will be found on the Prevost Car site in the appropriate service manual.

It doe not matter who converted the coach because chassis batteries are strictly for the chassis and I have never heard of a 3 battery Prevost installation.

What you should end up with is all 4 being in series and parallel so you have 2 sets of 24V and 2 of 12V with the Vanner equalizer maintaining the 12V charge.

“Artists rendering of how lines are ran.”

Is there a gallery where I can find signed originals by this artist?

Sorry I ment to say house batteries. Engine batteries have all been swapped already

    I agree with Don’s solution…

I also agree with Don. As long as the neg goes to neg and pos to pos on all batteries you’re fine. Having those multiple leads going to the electronics just allows more current to flow and a bit better equalized pull but doesn’t really matter

Strange, I just did mine and I only had space for 3 on my 99 Liberty.

Take this opportunity to service both AUX and awning compressors if you haven’t already. I wired a switch in for the awning compressor that goes to the front of the entertainment center. This way you can shut off the compressor when you are not using the awning. Otherwise, it will just run and run if there is a leak. You could remove the connection at the fuse panel as a stop gap. Also took this opportunity to remove the air push lock connections for the awning and AUX at the compressors.

It amazes me how lazy some service centers are, don’t get me started. If you want things done right, do it yourself, or use a trusted converter service center.

I like the sketch, i do this too, it helps me get my mind around how things work. There are many posts on this site on how to wire a battery bank, the artist rendition you show is incorrect and will overcharge and overdraw the battery that you show with all the terminations. See picture attached.

    Mike: Great artistic contribution!

The negative cable to the “400Ah12v” (the load?) could be fastened to the top battery (as you have it) or probably to any negative post. Let’s say we put the negative cable to the “400Ah12v” on the bottom battery; like the positive cable is.

What is the technical impact? I’m not an electrical engineer, but intuitively I’m thinking that having the positive cable to the “load” from one end of the line of four batteries and the negative cable to the “load” at the other end of the line them pulls electricity through the entire package of four batteries.

I presume hooking the both the positive and negative cables to the “load” at only a single battery would then pull electricity primarily from that battery which would discharge the four unevenly.

I wonder how accurate my thoughts are.

It had a welded battery strap point in the 4th battery tray. Taking the grinder to that part opened up the 4th battery tray. My understanding is that the bus is built how someone wants it, if a person wanted more capacity they would have added a 4th battery. The drawing is how the batteries were wired when I bought it, being 25 years old im sure someone has done this a few times and might have wired something in wrong.

My battery bay is only batteries and no compressors, my air compressor is under the nose. I have the poor mans awnings that you have to operate by hand.

I need to get some 4-0 cables and make new runs. What really sucks is I will prob have to pull the top 2 batteries out to wire this in correctly. Just how it goes at times I guess.

This is how tight it is, only about 1.5″ around the batteries
