Honda Generator
When I go to my brother in law’s house in Huntington Beach I park at the curb and use a 100 foot large cord plug into a 15 amp plug at his house, one inverter I set charge off the other I set to 15 amps shore power and it works fine refrigerator and that one inverter set to 15 amps and even 1 tv. I bought a Honda Generator EU2200I on E-Bay and I was going to try it at Rincon beach dry camping,But I thought I was going to just plug it into a Genius 15000 charger and help charge batteries, Or could I just plug it into the bus and do like I do in Huntington Beach and set one inverter to 15 amps and other off. I tried it a couple of weeks ago when I got gen and Surge protector would not kick in I tried a ground wire but it did not help, I could push bypass on surge protector to make it go through it and might have to ground it through transfer switch. Should that work?? I bought gen to have power on property in back area instead of running cords, Then I thought of dry camping, We only go to a couple of places dry camping.

Ok, hmm, ill be the dumb one to ask it. Dont you have a 15 or 17.5 or 20 KW genset on board that came installed in your bus. We use ours. It has 4300 hours on it. Hondas are good for our airstream, but need 2 to ooerste the rooftop a/c.

Yes It has a 17.5 KW Powertech gen at the beach we only need batteries to charge and keep Refrigerator going. The Royale is very efficient, If I need microwave or hair dryers in morning I will run Powetech. That little gen is so Quiet and all day and night on a gallon of gas. I use to have old solar on the roof that worked some what (not well) I removed it this last winter and fixed all the holes and going to re coat the roof with ceramic coating. Instead of putting new solar back on, for using it once maybe twice a year. And I already own the Honda Gen.

Art, I would reconsider Solar if I were you, once it is installed the cost is nothing from you, time or $. I have 400 watts on my roof, and i can let my bus sit for eternity running the fridge, lights, water pump, TV etc. An example is I go down to Quartzsite last week of January every year and i rarely run my Generator for the entire week with qty (4) 8D batteries. I would never remove my Solar.

While solar might be free AFTER it is installed and wired correctly, but the cost of enough solar to replace a small generator (or 2) can be pretty steep. I know the price of solar is always coming down, but it it were cheap, every house in the US would have solar on their roof.

For as little as we dry camp, I hate putting more holes in my roof,the old solar was 20 years old 4 different brands of panels, We use to be a Zamp dealer a long time ago, and helped my friend install 4 panels on his Tiffin last year, Last year we installed 12000 watts of solar at our house and I know how expensive solar is. We live in the house, Bus is a fun thing, I love solar but not on the bus I hate drilling holes in the bus.If we lived in our bus I would put solar on it.

You are totally correct Not having a ground the relay needs a ground to pull in and surge and ATS switch same thing need a ground to pull in, I’ve grounded a gen on my buddies Monaco and it worked,Later today I tried on mine no go. I have a double 50 amp breaker box right after it comes in bus,before wired in Progressive surge, The double 50 amp breaker box has red 125v Blk 125v from neutral but nothing from green ground to anything.

Have had a Honda 3000 generator for years. Used it on all my previous RVs but couldn’t get it to work on the Prevost. I’m not very good with electrical issues and have thought about getting rid of it because I couldn’t get it to run the Prevost. Bought the ground plug and presto it works.
Keep the bus in an enclosed climate controlled garage. With the ability to use the Honda, if we have a hurricane here in central FL I can keep the bus in the garage with the Honda outside and be able to run the battery charger, fridge, & bedroom AC.

If you look by the 120v receptacles on gen it should say Bonded or Neutral floating, Did you see the fix for it pretty easy. Plug that plug in to 1 of the receptacles and the other receptacle will be bonded. There is some good videos on that.

Plugged in the grounded neutral plug to one of the 20 Amp plug and presto the 30 Amp plug now will power the bus.

I am Curious to why this is needed on specific builds? My Country Coach can take a direct connection without this device. Anyone know why?

I have a Progressive Industries 50 amp surge protector hard wired in and with out a ground the relay won’t pull in then after that the transfer switch needs a ground also. The other day I had gen running plugged it in to bus with a 50 to 30 to 15 amp adapters and with my volt meter the 15amp plug had 125v between the 2 prongs hot and neutral but no power between round plug (ground) and hot,I plugged it in to bus and no go. Your Country Coach I’m surprised it would work.

It works fine, I also don’t have any of the GFCI issues i hear about on these forums.
