Holding Tanks
Posted by Darrell on May 2, 2016 at 12:00 amI have a 1996 Prevost XL45 Liberty and I cant seem to find out why my holding tank gauges are not working, all I get ia an Alarm sounding and all lights are lit, this is on bot the fresh water and the black monitor’s .
Any Ideas of were to look to find the problem?

Libby,
The head hunter tank monitoring systems need to be recalibrated from time to time. You can find the instructions on calibration in the owners manual as well as there are some youtube videos that go over it. Kind of a complex set of steps. Needs to make sure the tanks are empty, press the plunger on the sending unit, adjust the low level pot on the back of the monitor panel, fill the tanks, press the plunger on the sending unit again and then set the high level pot on the back of the monitor panel.
But read the manual and watch the video for the specifics. USeally takes a couple times to make sure it’s perfect (or close to it).

Have dumped a bag of ice thru toilet into holding tank when leaving camp ground(almost empty) and the drive with the ice cubes churning did dislodge crud. What worked for me may not work for you! Ice then metled and came out next dump.

I like the ice cube idea! That is a good one.
What about the bag of ice or all the ice in the freezer down the toilet plus two cups of Dawn?

Typically on later model Liberty coaches the Headhunter tank level monitoring system uses a plastic tube which goes into the tanks to monitor head pressure on the contents of the tank.
As was posted previously the starting point is to remove the tube from the tank and clean it if necessary. Then recalibrate the level sensor using the instructions for the device. They are listed on the Headhunter web site if they are not availbale with the coach documents.
The recalibration procedure calls for emptying and filling the tanks which takes a l lot of time and uses a lot of water. As a substitute you can accomplish the same thing by using a pipe the same height as the tank, plugging one end and filling it with water. The sensor is measuring head pressure not volume so the calibration can be done with this small volume of water outside the water and holding tanks, and then when done the tube can be returned to its position in the tank being monitored.

We had a similar problem last year in the Grand Canyon. The tube that goes into the tanks comes from a device on top of the tank, is an air tube and it measures pressure. If the O-rings are like Tom, old and dry, they must be replaced. They are commonly found at home repair centers. There are several, maybe 5-6, but disassembly and repair is pretty quick and easy. Calibration wouldn’t do anything until this is done, and I never had to calibrate.

Replaced the O-rings on my tank in Sacramento Ca. the O-ring
part number is 287 from Homedepot. I would try to use an air hose to blow in
the tank ” have to remove the hose on the sensor box to blow air into it”
and that may clean the sludge in the tub. I would try that first. -
Cleaning out any accumulation in the hoses addresses that issue but does not recalibrate them unless the unit is not out of calibration.

I am having some of the same issues with my SYM-2Q Headhunter monitor. It’s been recalibrated
several times and I can’t get it below 10% reading when I know its empty. Then
without explanation it will show 30-40 or even full.My
question; is there anything on the end of the tube in the tank that would come
off or cause a catastrophic failure if compressed air be blown through the
line. I’m thinking there may be some debris or residue in the tube.Thanks

Ray, There should be nothing in the hose or plastic line, but pulling it should be easy so you can examine it.
It takes me about 10 minutes to remove the line, flush it clean, inside and out and return it to the tank.

some converters use a 90 degree swivel at the top of the tank and they tend to leak with age.
