  • Holding Tank Material

Correct me if I’m wrong, but none of our coaches were produced from the same mold. They are “custom” built, “built to order”.

With that belief, I do know that our particular coach has 3 separate holding tanks, with 3 separate gauging systems. There is NOT an interconnect for the gray and black tanks.

The fresh and gray tanks are made of 1/4′ thick translucent plastic. At this time there is nothing wrong with the plastic tanks at all. I can’t think of anything that might go wrong with them in the future.

The black tank looks like it is made of galvanized steel but I could be wrong. It might be aluminum, based on the welds I see. I pulled a 2″ rubber cap off and looked inside and can see some corrosion. Its just a matter of time.

Here where I live, there is a company that will build custom plastic tanks to spec for anybody for not much $. If my metal tank fails while I own it I’ll be replacing it with a plactic tank unless somebody can convience me to do otherwise.

    Educate Me. Thoughts?

    Hello lonestarace,

My tank is a black and grey all in one. I think that is a Liberty thing. My aluminum tank had little black pin holes in it. When I was at Jeff Rowe’s shop East Tennessee Luxury Coach, he pointed the pin holes out to me. The last thing I wanted was a catastrophic failure of the poop tank while sitting at a campground or anywhere else for that matter. Jeff told me if the tank had pin holes in the sides where we could see them, the bottom would be much worse. After he changed out the tank and I saw it laying on the ground outside I was amazed at how much corrosion there was. I could punch a pocket knife through the bottom almost anywhere I tried. The large bung where the dump valve attached was rotted completly off on the bottom. I dodged a bullet and I am grateful that Jeff Rowe brought it to my attention. Jeff installed a stainless tank built just for my coach by Jon’s daughters company. The price was more than fair. The taink is a very well built tank and the welds were professionally done. I also own a fabrication shop and I can build that same tank with no issue but with that said, the price Jeff gave me to do the install was a very good price.

Steve: Did Jeff discover the problem with your waste holding tank during an oil change? Is so, aren’t you glad you didn’t buy the oil at Wal-Mart and do the oil change yourself?

I took my bus to Jeff very soon after I purchased it. I just wanted him to take care of a few things I had found and to have him look for the things I knew nothing about. We changed air bags, hot water tank, fixed two hours or so of leaks, etc. After we were all rapped up he said he wanted to show me something about my tank. He said I needed to put it on my radar to fix soon. As soon as i was done running around in Florida I dropped it off and he changed it for me!
