Highway rest areas in the summer
Posted by Gerald on September 4, 2013 at 10:56 amGlad summer is starting to wind down here in the West. The truck parking areas become unusable with the lack of rain and the bad habit of truckers to dump their urine containers right at the parking area. Taking them to the toilet area never seems to cross their mind.
Afraid to leave the bus and track the mess back into the living area. Is this just a problem here in the West or is it country wide?

We have seen the same practice everywhere trucks stop. We see it more in truck stops but over the years it seems the practice occurs anywhere trucks stop.
Our issue with summer travel is the lack of open spots in rest areas due to more tourist traffic on the road and campers and people towing small boats taking up valuable large parking spots. We travel mostly east and I don’t think anything is different from region to region.

It’s nationwide, piss bombs, they’re disgusting. And remember, the rest area blacktop that you are kneeling on to look under your bus is the toilet of choice at night!

It’s a shame an industry I have grown up in has turned into an image disaster and it’s all self inflicted. The class of drivers and what I see when we travel numbs me. When and how this changeover took place is beyond me but I imagine there are many factors involved.
We have turned into Walmart specialists and have a book and make notes of an exit with a big pullout or a small gas station with some room or a friend with a big driveway, any place to get away from the ever present trucks. This industry has treated me very well and has allowed us to live a good life but it needs a Hollywood PR agent to try and do something with it’s ever present image problem. They cannot police themselves and it seems nobody cares.

It’s not just truckers. Forgive the language but it seems like nobody gives a shit. I have seen aviation change from a profession of skilled pilots who actually knew how to fly a plane to morons that push buttons.
Remember when the service industry actually provided a service with skill and a smile?
I’m off my soap box and will shuit up. 700 plus miles today and my cold adult beverage awaits.

It’s OK to tell Jon he should post after the adult beverage! We have to cut him some slack, he just went through 3 hard days of lobster gorging and wouldn’t even answer his flip phone, so after 700 miles of flipping off 4 wheelers, he’s just a bit testy.

Gotta cut Jon some slack…I am sure he has been very busy checking out how his fuel mileage is doing on this trip. I hope he has good news when he gets back…

I might add that he did his gorging with a big smile. Rick

As to the issues of truck drivers throwing piss bottles everywhere, we even had some that thought they should just toss them out in our yard when they got in. Too lazy to put it in the dumpster even. I caught one guy doing it and made him clean out the entire yard before we let him leave. The amount of bottles being dumped was reduced to almost zero shortly after. I guess he must have told everyone about his garbage duties….I don’t think he liked it.

Always found the Walmart option to be very tenable. The Walmart guide is semi accurate and can serve as a good jump off point for quick access overnight parking. There are lots of space availability issues ie it can be very DIFFICULT to find bus parking around the holidays!! Also the newest generation of stores have made it difficult for busses to manuver around the tight corners and jammed car parking spaces. This very topic would make a great forum!! The top 100 WALMART parking lots for overnighting!!

I can tell you from being a trucker in the past, and I’m talking about back in the 70’s and 80’s, it was a problem them, and still is. The urine smell is because they go on the ground when they stop rather than going to a restroom. Seen it many many times.
Truck stop parking and rest area parking smell the same…………yuk
