I thought one time a while back you said that you would take out a relay to prevent the break lights from going on when you used your Jake. I’d like to do the same thing with mine but which relay is the one I take out?

    Thank you.

I’ll look Fred, it’s in the rear electrical box and labeled on the door.

    Fred,

On mine it’s relay R-76 in the rear cabinet and is 24v.

Hey Tom, why would you want them to “not” come on with the jake engaged, I have never heard of that, and it makes me curious.

Thanks for the reply Tom, I’ll check to see if mine uses the same relay.

    Hi
BCO, Sometimes when I’m controlling my decent down a long shallow hill, I
don’t necessarily need or want the brake lights to be on for an extended period
of time. If I need the traffic behind me, in those cases, to know I’m slowing
down faster, I’ll tap the break pedal to flash my break lights.

    Okay, I understand now, thanks.

Really don’t know if mine engages the brake lights or not, I have LED’s so heat build up is not a problem. As for the traffic, it is my benefit to let them know I am decreasing my speed, if not only slowly or at a high rate, figure the more they know, the less I have to worry about.

At least in theory it seems like a good idea. So I am alright with them lighting up.

I pulled mine today…same as Tom’s and also Jon’s. I was confused about where it was and it said “Break Signal” on the diagram for either retarder or jake. Thought it was something engine related, but it is the light circuit.

Main reason to do it is when using cruise control. Everytime you get slightly over the set speed the Jake or retarder will come on to slow you down a bit, and the brake lights come on. Also when going down a hill for extended period of time, the lights are on the whole way down even if you are not slowing down, but maintaining your speed.

Nothing worse than following someone using the Jake to maintain speed, off, on, off, on, off, on. You get the picture and when they acually do hit the brakes, your thinking, it’s just that damn jake again, when in fact they’re braking big time.

So if I’m doing the same thing, with the relay pulled, I’m not driving the trucks nuts behind me and when they see my brake lights, it’s the real deal.

Pulling the plug on jake brake lights makes sense.

Mark, The relay you pulled was in the electric panel above the engine labled “brake signal ” ?

    Thanks

Yes, rear box. I think it is “Break Signal retarder or Jake” if memory serves. #76 just as Tom and Jon have posted.

    Al,

On my coach and I presume yours it is the 10th relay counting from the left or right.

Mine ended up being number “76” like Tom said.

    Thanks Mark, Jon, Tom

Checked this out today and as stated is exactly what I found. Relay marked #76 pulled.
