For most owners purchasing a coach was a decision made after experiencing that “eureka” moment. Over the years we bought 3 coaches and in every case we would step into the coach, and before moving towards the rear we looked around and knew the coach was one we wanted.

Conversely we did the same with many more coaches and knew right from the first look the coach was not for us.

I think before even considering an inspection you need to experience that strong sense the coach is for you. That is a very personal thing and while any of us can inspect a coach and tell you it is a nice coach or everything works we cannot tell you what works to trip your trigger. If you do not see it personally you are unaware of how it smells, if it shows the subtle signs of wear or abuse, or if the coach speaks to you.

A coach is expensive and the only reason I could justify having someone give a coach an inspection is to look at it through the buyer’s eyes to verify it is as represented. If the seller has listed it as having everything working, pristine condition, etc. a local owner can quickly breeze through the coach and assess the accuracy of how it is represented such as are the tires recent or are they aged with a lot of tire dressing. But there is no substitute for a potential buyer having that first look.

As long as you are fairly close, why not take it to Prevost Dallas. May set you back a few hundred dollars but I can attest that these guys know their stuff, not only the chassis but also the conversions. Ask for Jackie……

Prevost is where I would take mine to be checked out. Not far from you in Lewisville. Anytime you take your coach in to Prevost for whatever reason they hit the lift and check everything underneath. Gives me piece of mind.

While I do not disagree with Prevost doing a check out, does the checkout include tire age, battery age, house condition, workings of house systrems, etc? Those are equally important. Will Prevost tell you the house smells like a kennel or an ash tray?

While problems with house goodies make me wanna scream, I still like the coach parts (air,driveline, motor and trans) operate so I can drive to somebody to fix house problems. Of course, I’m a mullet and don’t fix much of nothing. Just ask my wife!

Depending on where this coach is on your short list you may want to go to an extensive inspection, or just a cursory one. You don’t indicate if you have seen and set foot in the coach, but if from an internet viewing and discussions with the dealer I decided it was one I liked but wasn’t sure of I would create a list of questions for the dealer to answer.

Remember that at some point you are going to exchange cash for title so as long as you hold the cash you can expect a great degree of honesty, especially if you are prepared to walk away the minute you realize you’ve been mislead.

Things I would ask before I started asking someone to inspect the coach and before I made a plane reservation would be have the codes been run? Has the transmission been checked? Both just require a Detroit / Allison dealer to plug up a computer. I would ask for the date codes on the batteries and tires. I would ask for the temperature differentials on the supply and return sides of all the AC units. Those are the biggies.

I would ask what condition all the records are in. In other words is there a service history, are all equipment mauals available, what documentation exists to show the age of the service items such as air bags, brake chambers, shocks, valves, etc.

Does everything work? AC units, Webasto or Aquahot, appliances, etc.

Remember, this is a dealer and if the dealer gives it a wash job and sticks it on the lot his price your offer needs to be near the bottom of the scale. If however he goes completely through the coach he is going to be happy to answer your questions and provide you with the comfort of knowing when you or someone inspecting the coach sees it they will not be disappointed. He is rightfully going to ask a price to reflect the value of a coach with all systems and components given a clean bill of health.

Thanks for all the help guys the coach in Lewisville did not work out. How ever I just started another thread found one in Anaheim that I believe is the one for me.
