That photo where you stated that the red wire “looks like it got hot” is a big red flag. If the black stuff is actually heat degradation, I would peel off the red heat shrink and have a look. It only takes a little contact resistance to create heat and heat on this particular connector is very bad since it will travel into the breaker and cause it to trip.

These cables never run hot when the connections are good. Those black marks coming from around the heat shrink made me do an immediate double-take. You really need to confirm that the lug to cable crimp connection is good. If you’ve changed the relay then things may be alright for a while, since you’ve twisted the lug a bit in taking it off and putting it back on. I would drive for a hundred miles or so and then put my finger on it. If its hot then you still have a problem.

Tom, I do have some diagrams in the back of my owners manual binder but not sure if it is complete or not, but it is helpful!

Jon, do I need to test both 12/24 at the equalizer and input and output side of monitor?

    Thanks!

I guess you could test at either place, but the monitor input is usually very easy to get at.

The 12 volt side needs to be 50% of the 24 volt side voltage within 1/2 volt. If it is then the monitor is bad. If it is outside that range then it is likely the equalizer is bad. There are other equalizer specific tests, but I start with the easiest stuff.

Fred, I will take a close look at the cable coming off the alternator, I actually think it is ok but will check and see if it is getting hot.

I tested the voltage coming out of the equalizer going into the monitor and get a reading that is within spec I think. 263 and 133. (engine off)

I bought this EM70d used off eBay…could certainly be bad…this is no fun!

Yup, bad monitor. Just unplug the terminal for battery balance to make the light go out until you buy a NEW monitor.

Depending on your setup you MAY have to have the ignition on to get valid voltage readings from the Vannar.

Gil I will try that, I also spoke to a guy at Vanner who said sometimes an older battery will cause this issue if the coach has sat for a bit, I could drive it before I do an oil change tomorrow and see if it goes out. He said one battery will be slightly lower and you can test voltages on the batt to rule that out, sometimes its a few seconds, sometimes minutes.

I can see the electrical on this thing is going to be a big part of the work!!
