  • Heat Zones

Posted by Ron on November 22, 2018 at 2:09 pm

Just thinking about cold weather travel. On my Dutch Star, the hydronic heat had 2 zones and the middle thermostat wasn’t used. I’m wondering which of the four thermostats are active and control the kick heaters and the Webasto heat.

    Ron,

If you compare your Dutchstar to your Marathon for reference you will be in a world of trouble.

My 07 had 4 SMX controls, you need to shut everything down and while plugged in you’ll find 1 SMX in the bedroom will control both heat sources. Turn each one on at high heat setting on the SMX and see which comes on. I had 2 SMX controls in the bedroom but only 1 operates bedroom heat for toe kick and 12v, the other is hall/ bedroom. Its probably the one next to your bed on the wall left side.

3 of the 4 SMX controls will control both 12v and toe kick, bedroom, galley and salon but that’s mis-leading because the registers are in the cockpit at the bottom of the dash and top of stairs. On Marathons the electric and webasto (12v) registers are next to each other on the floor or close by. Remember both buttons in your closet have to be pushed for either to work.

After you figure that out I would unplug and check which ones are on inverter power. That way you know how to stay warm

It’s sounds confusing but get your wife who hears better than you and take 20 mins to figure this out.

After you do that and understand the Marathon logic you will know why it’s done this way.

Hope everyone is enjoying their family today.

Ron, in my 07 H3, the thermostat reward in the bedroom only controls the rear A/C Heat pump so forget about it.

While dry camping and the 12V or 120 V or both buttons in the bathroom activated you can use the SMX by the bed side to control the bedroom toe kick or the webasto under the bed.

You might not have any power on the SMX in the galley and if this is the case you can’t get the two heaters to work. On shore or Gin the thermostat will have power and activate the heaters 12V and 120V.

So if you are dry camping and need the 12V under the galley cabinet, go up front and on the drivers panel below the toll window push the button that says A/C Select. This will turn on the power to the thermostat and allow you to operate the webasto toe kick.

I don’t think any of the 120V toe kicks will run on inverter.

Marathon set them up to operate the Bed/Bath A/C and the Salon A/C while running the main engine and using the alternators but if you wanted to switch the Bed/Bath A/C unit off and run the Galley A/C you would push this button A/C Select and it switches which A/C unit you can use.
