Headllights
I have searched the threads rather completely for the receommended replacement for the hi / lo beam headlights for the 1998 XL. There are certainly some excellent posts as to what certain persons have done… yet I cannot for the life ofme determine which “set’ should be used as a better lighting system. The current lights are from the Ford F-150 and are the 8″ X 10” beams and I do not know from what year. Nonetheless, I want a better set up if I am going to go to the trouble of new lights…
Incidentally, I was in Central Texas and had to replace one of the headlights so I went to a Ford dealer to get a replacement. I called Prevost parts in Illinois and “Charlie” answered. I explained I was on the road and a light had gone out and I was at the Ford dealer trying to get an emergency replacement. He would not assist me with any information other than they sell a replacement and would give me no further information. He told me the replacement was $111.92 and he then hung up…. literally left me standing in the parts department with no answer.
That is another story for a later day… not what I am used to from Prevost… after the capital outlays there over the last two years…
Any thoughts on the lights please…

I should also say they may be the worst headlights on the planet. Xtreme Paint (a sponsor) has a great replacement and James the owner has the replacement on his personal coach. He can do HID or halogen. Both much better light and each has their own pros and cons as a replacement.

Again, thank you for your guidance. I did talk to James at Xtreme Paint and he uses a very expensive set of $3000 headlights that I do not care to install.
I looked at Ebay and found a complete set of the Broco ’91 lights for $160… a lot better than the $223 that Prevost Parts of Illinois quoted… James is going to do the install when I get the lights…
I am ordering the Bronco lights and will then find a stronger replacement bulb for the set. It may not be the best answer but will be a significant improvement.
Does anyone have an idea which bulb might be a replacement??

There is no such thing as “enough” light from our headlights. The Ford type headlights using standard bulb are not so good, replacing the bulb with a high intensity such as you might get at any auto parts store is better, but the current style, while expensive takes the lighting up to a completely higher level.
Before you decide for sure, the next time you are with another Prevost that has the current style lights compare yours to that one. The difference is literally like night and day. I don’t use my high beams the low beams are so good. If you drive at night you need to consider the new style.

Are the new style lights also from an identifiable motor manufacturer/specific model or are they a bit more bespoke?

at plug in to bulb. It’s not uncommon to only have 11.6 volts there when there should be at least 12.5 or better. The drop will result in a 50% drop in out put. this can be overcome by wiring in relays connected to present headlight switch and a direct feed to headlights= full avail voltage. the problem occures when old switches and relays along with marginal sized wiring (stock) are combined. Zeon bulbs are best now in your case as led aren’t quite there yet.Simple check your voltage at headlights. The optics on the ford style headlights just isn’t good. Bob

If you can come up with a glass lens headlight that is best. Were some out there that was made for overseas market.

The current style lights are not from any other vehicle such as Prevost has used since the early 90’s. They are an assembly of small lights for normal and high beam with a turn signal They are halogen bulb lights, with separate low and high beam modules mounted along with an LED turn signal / parking lamp mounted on a base as an assembly.
They are specific to Prevost coaches.

The older owner of my coach put in new halogen lights … they still “suck”!
A few weeks ago while driving back to Kansas from ETLC we did our maiden night-time vogage into Alma, Kansas, a small town in the middle of no where. My wife has a cousin who told us we could park at a baseball field parking lot.
The lights on our coach were barely effective enough to turn into what we thought was the baseball parking lot. When we woke up in the morning, it turned out we were at the city sewer plant!
Note to self … no night time driving absent a 911 call-out …

Do you have the stock 4 headlights or two? I have the four and they’re really good at night.

We have the stock Prevost “bronco” light buckets on our 98 XL. I replaced the stock bulbs with sylvania ultras from advanced auto. No complaints so far. It made a big difference. I also changed out the fog lights with new halogens.

Tim put a light bar from rigid industry’s on I put them in where there was the fog lights , but am getting ready to put a big light bar down low in between the fog lights about 34 inches it will light it up like a football field we have them on all the service trucks , they are great

I do have the four head lights. “Suck” was probably an exageration, but I was expecting better without having to engage my high-beams. We’ll compare down in Lakeland …
