  • Half the 120volt system is out?

    We spent the weekend at Road America (Friday morning through Monday morning) on RA’s 240v/60amp (each of the connected breakers said “60”) shore power. Came home Monday morning and plugged into our normal 240v/50amp shore power. No problems

    Today (Thursday afternoon) Cathie said the refrigerator isn’t running. So I went out. This is what I was presented with:

    The left Heart Inverter is dead. The line voltage of the left side (leg?) of the 120v is negative. There is NO power to any breakers on the panel for the refrigerator, microwave, etc.

    I cycled the breakers on the shore panel box in the first bay driver’s side “off/on”, cycled the breakers for the 240v/50amp plug on the Jamestown RV panel I use for shorepower “off/on”, and finally cycled the breakers on the main panel in the race shop that feeds the Jamestown shore power panel “off/on”. Nothing changed.

    Anyone have any ideas as to what’s wrong?

    Shorepower input looks ok. It does look like your problem is the left inverter. All devices downstream of that inverter would be affected. I’d check fuses and connections to battery bank for the left inverter. If it has DC power, the inverter has gone TU.

    I don’t know what is wrong, but if leg 1 inverter is shut down, and you want to reset it, follow these steps in order:

    1) No shore power.

    2 ) Unplug genny autostart.

    3 ) Turn off inverters at their remotes.

    4) Turn off breakers for leg 1 and 2 at the control panel. They may be labeled battery charger 1 and battery charger 2.

    5) Turn off master switch(s) outside to disconnect house batteries from inverters. Mine is located in the house battery compartment. You will have one or two of these.

    6) Wait 5 minutes for the diodes in the inverters to bleed down.

    7) Restart by reversing the sequence, that is 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

    Shut down may be heat related due to the fans on the back and outside the inverter case inop.

    The way the Liberty is set up is if you have power from the generator or shore power on both 120V legs you will see the small green indicator lights next to the breakers in the electric panels where there is power with the CBs on.

    I forgot which circuits share the inverter that powers the refrigerator but if the inverter is the issue those circuits will not have power when non-inverter circuits have power. On a Liberty incoming power from shore or generator is not inverted, but passes through the inverter via an internal relay. If you determine all except the circuits on that inverter have power trying to recycle the inverter seems like the next logical step. If all circuits on that leg are dead the fault is with the power supply.

    Anyone with a Liberty with the inverter set up shown has no way to get power to by-pass the inverter which is why I created a by-pass provision in my 97 coach so as long as I had shore or generator power I could get power to the circuits. As set up now you have to repair or replace the inverter.

    Jeff, are you sure that inverter inverts when there is incoming AC?

    If I remember those inverters had a Potter Brumfield relay that just passed incoming power through to the panel and also the incoming power was fed into the charger side. It seems like a few tests with a voltmeter could narrow the issue down. Verify incoming power via the green lights on the panel. Then turn off both inverters at the panel and let the house batteries rest for a while and measure voltage, then turn on the bad one and measure voltage at the house batteries again to see if the charger side of the inverter is functioning

    I dont exacty know what it means or doesnt, but when Im plugged into shore power, the green light is on indicating shore power along with another green light above the word inverter. I see yours is not on.

    Probably doesnt help you but I would be curious to see what Jon is asking. Will it still charge your batteries, bypass AC power, or do nothing?

    I didn’t want to get into how Liberty sets up the electric panel, but maybe that will help to understand where I was going. This is specfic to the genration of Dick’s coach.

    Incoming electric from the generator or shore enters the bus and powers most of the circuits in the electric panel. It does not power those circuits that are on inverter such as the refrigerator, forward and rear outlets, microwave, TVs, aux air, etc. The 6 or 7 circuits powered through inverters do not get any power from shore or generator power unless the battery 1 and 2 switches are on.

    That power goes to the inverters in the form of 2 separate 3 wire cables of 10 gauge. When it reaches the inverter one cable is connected to the battery charger input and the other is the power that goes to the dedicated inverter circuits listed above.

    The inverter out put is through inversion or from the input discussed above. The inverted power is only during those times when there is no incoming 120VAC and that power is drawn from the batteries to provide the 120 to the inverter circuits.

    So if a coach has power from shore or generator getting to the panel, and the circuit breaker is on a green light will be lit. That light will be adjacent to every circuit breaker that is on and it is an indication that shore or generator power is reaching past the circuit breaker and to the device.

    If the inverter is not passing power there may be a green light next to the battey 1 or 2 circuit breaker indicating shore or generator power is past the circuit breaker, but if no grean light is on next to the refrigerator or micrtowave or outlet circuit breaker it indicates the breaker is off or there is not power from the inverter to the circuit.

    I think this information is valid for the coaches equipped with the Freedom 2500 inverters and if Jeff thinks I am screwed up in my thinking I am hoping he will correct the error.

    Dick’s control panel probably has 32 circuit breakers arranged in 4 quadrants of 8 beakers each. Only the lower left quadrant are the 8 inverted circuits. Of those, the top four breakers are powered by leg 1 and the bottom four breakers are powered by leg two. At least that is how it started life.

    My panels have had different arrangements so I was reluctant to describe placement, but Dan is correct in that the breakers for each of the inverters will be adjacent to one another.

    As Jeff pointed out, the inverter is not inverting, that should point to a D C issue. Dick – is there D C power at the inverter disconnect?

    I think we need to define “inverting”.

    Unless I am completely mistaken the inverter in question “inverts” meaning converts battery power (DC) to line voltage (AC) in the absence of incoming 120VAC power.

    When there is 120VAC power to the inverter it stops being an inverter and becomes a 3 stage battery charger and just passes incoming line voltage through back to the inverter circuits in the electric panel. The problem could be in the inverter control boards or it could be as simple as a non-functioning relay. Are those circuits “hot” when there is no incoming 120VAC power? If so it is functioning as an inverter, but is not allowing a pass through when there is power.

    “Dick – is there D C power at the inverter disconnect?” Where do I find that? Behind the inverter itself? or behind the plexiglass panel?

    The inverters are arranged one behind the other on the floor of the electrical bay, so the second one is hard to get to and there is a shelf over both. I can’t find a placard #1 or #2 on either (which will change once I figure out which one is which).

    Call into Jeff as instructed. At home, plugged into shorepower, refrigerator emptied of anything that would spoil, no impending trips, so no rush. Once I’ve talked to Jeff, I’ll update. Thanks for the interest, concern, and posts.
