  • H3-45 Fuel Tank Vent/Filling Issue

Posted by Matthew on July 30, 2013 at 2:08 pm

Is this normal? No matter what type of pump I use, whether it be a truck style, or auto diesel pump. I cannot use the auto fill feature of the fuel pumps. It simply shuts off as soon as I start. You can hear fuel rushing to the neck when the tank is nearly empty. It’s becoming quite annoying and somewhat bothersome. So again is this normal, does anyone else have this problem. Surely not considering it’s a commercial bus, and I assume fueling is something they planned for. Thanks for your help.

PS: I used the speech function on my iPhone so forgive the odd grammar.

    Matt,

I have no H3 experience but my 87 single side fill would take full nozzle flow right up to autmatic shutoff and never spill a drop. My two side fill 06 is the same way. My 97 two side fill would puke copious amounts of fuel about one or 2 seconds after automatic shut off. I never had trouble getting fuel flow to start, and the nozzle would shut off when full, but for whatever reason after enough delay from nozzle shut off a large slug of diesel would puke out of the tank ruining jeans and shoes.

All three of the coaches listed above were XL series.

It sounds as if you have a blockage of some sort if you are having trouble getting it to flow.

Must be something wrong… our H fills perfectly… never burps or cuts off… fills fine from both sides… something isn’t right.

    Cheers,

I have learned on my H that its best to fill from drivers side only. If I fill from both sides, it will push fuel out from one side or the other, especially if it’s not exactly level. The hoses do not have enough “fall” to permit fast fueling. I have to fill slow (still on automatic) to keep from backing up when using a fast truck pump such as Pilot. Slower pumps are no problem.

I pick the drivers side only because, the main pumps are on that side normally.

Make sure its level and the vents are not plugged.. I had hell with mine stopping early until I got its ride-level in check. It doesn’t take but a few degrees of off-axis tilt. Now she fills to the top with both sides running so quick you can hear the credit card squeal.

I fill from one side, but I always open the other side cap to allow the pressure to equalize to atmosphere. I had to do this same trick on my Bluebird.

Some of the old Bluebird owners whould add a PVC pipe that would go from the top of the filler down the filler pipe into the tank so that the fuel gets further down the filler neck without impacting the gas pump nozzle venturi auto-shut off. I would think the PVC pipe has to be such that it does not cover up the venturi vaccum tube in the gas pump nozzle for that to work. You can do a google search for “wanderlodge diesel filler tube” and read the post on the Wanderlodge site from John Finn.

I dont like leaving the nozzle unattended because there is not much angle to the tank filler necks on the H3-45 and I feel like that nozzle could easily fall out. So I just cheat and open up the opposite filler neck and close its filler door (so I dont give somone a shower by mistake) to allow pressure release and then go to the opposite and let it rip. I know when I am getting close by the sound of the fuel filling into the tank and slow down so I dont shoot fuel out the other side 🙂
