  • H Door Lock Maintenance

Posted by Archived on May 5, 2017 at 7:32 am

My dash light stays on indicating a door isn’t locked as discussed in a previous post by Tim. I locked all the doors with the switch and then found 3 doors were not locked. The first door I checked had nothing wrong with the motor or locking mechanism and needed lubricated. Two more to go, but here’s the first door problem.

This washer holding the spring was causing so much drag when sliding the motor couldn’t overcome. All it needs is lubricant.

Same with this locking rod that keeps the handle from opening when locked, just lube needed. I’ll be using white lithium grease.

The motors on the H are not near as robust as the XL & XLII motors, but it takes very little pressure to work the locking mechanism on the H if properly lubed. To access, just remove the 4 screws on the plastic cover then remove 4 10mm bolts and you can access the parts. You can’t just squirt lubricant through the key hole hoping to lube the tumbler, you have to lube the entire assembly.

I’ll update this as the progress moves forward.

I did lube all my doors as you stated & all doors locked & unlocked; however, dash light still stayed on which is why I removed Relay R71. As a note, I first used WD-40 to clean the mechanism, let it dry, then used white lithium grease to lube the entire mechanism.

Hopefully you find the answer to this problem.

I got all locks working now, have checked every door micro switch and the damn light is still on. Grrrrrrrrr.

For those that haven’t worked on these, this is what the micro switch looks like.

Uh, maybe a bad switch????? If all switches are found to be good, I would recommend a coach, with slides, for Nancy.

Did I mention I checked the ground for Relay R71 which controls the dash light.

Under the relay, there are numbers which show which ground where, according to the electronic schematics.

From the below schematic, “86” is a good ground for 24v which goes back to the fuse. “85” is not a good ground for 24V. and this tells me that the ground issue is in one of the 10 bay doors.

I think it’s the yellow wires (170R, P, etc.) since the schematic shows these are the wires that carry the the ground signal to all 10 bay doors with electronic locking mechanisms.

I’m certainly not an expert in this area so someone with more electrical knowledge please chime in …

Did I mention I removed the R71 and called it quits, but my bet is still on Tom finding an easy answer to the problem!

I had 2 that were not working causing my light to stay on. As Tom said, a little white lube on the spring/washer and actuator rod…….now my light is off and all working. I lubed them all while I was at it.

Best way to start out is, activate the bay lock on the dash, then go outside and see which one isn’t locking and start looking there.

Keep in mind, there is no remote locking feature on the engine bay door, drivers bay, or OTR air bay doors on a H.

Also, beware of the 3 phillips head screws that go into the plastic housing holding the actuator. On a previous coach, those got loose over time causing the actuator to “lean” over and not activate the switch, but yet the door would still lock and unlock! Drove me crazy finding that one.

Triple Foxtrot, that is certainly an easy solution for Tom, stop all this messy greasing and screwing around in the dirty bays and just buy a newer coach (With slides of course)

Now that I am a soon to be Marathon owner I am going to need some one to do a walk through with me to help me learn the Marathon way.

Do you all think Tom would be willing to help me with this, oh wait, he doesn’t have slides, ok never mind!!!!

We had a door unlocked light on our dash and it turned out that the Engine door wasn’t making contact with the switch… adjusted it and all was well. Just a thought .

Buddy, I hope you are reading all these Marathon tips and have learned all the secret handshakes and passwords to keep your new Marithon rolling. You also need to get Leon’s pnone numbers and put them on speed dial. If I had a nickle for every call Leon has answered to keep the Marithons moving, I could afford a brand new conversion of my choice. You will also have to learn where Marithon hides all the relays, switches, toggle items, clicking items and switching items and which bulkhead they are behind. Tim can help you there as he has had his H completely apart several times, in fact he is becoming the H guru that Jon is for the XL.

One more thing. Do not visit BoaterAl unless you have several weeks of free time as he will have you changing this, that and the other with all new NAPA parts.

Did I miss offending any Marithon owner?

    Enjoy the new ride.

Wish I could be there the first time Buddy pushes the sewer hose extend button and it hits him on the ankle. Oh, don’t worry about it not retracting Buddy, you can always bungee it to the side of the coach.

    Fred,

Haven’t you heard, Tom already put in his Marathon application to replace Leon upon his retirement.
