Greenbrier Classic – A must do event
We just returned from July 4 weekend in Lewisburg, WV. I am a WV kid, grew up there, and I’m a WVU alum. I have an affinity for the state, but this weekend was one of the best July 4 weekends I have ever had. If you are a golf fan, this is a must do!
My wife and I, our 3 teens, and the lab headed for Lewisburg, WV last Wed. After overnighting in our favorite layover spot going east (the UT Knoxville RV lot), we headed into WV Thu morning July 3 (also the day of our 20th wedding anniversary). We had secured a spot on pavement next to the fairground where the transportation to the tournament and the concerts were located. Over the weekend, we attended the Greenbrier golf tournament two days, saw a Maroon 5 concert Friday night with fireworks afterward, and saw Jimmy Buffet in concert Saturday night. The concerts are held in the natural outdoor ampitheater at the fairgrounds and it is spectacular. This was our third Jimmy Buffet concert and second with the kids. The daytime temps were in the 70s and it was 49 one night – just perfect! Pictures below…
If you decide to go, you can count on a really good work out for your bus as the mountains are pretty serious getting in there. You won’t mind 40 mph up hill though because the scenery is beautiful. The golf course is absolutley spectacular and much better than the last time I played it a few years ago. Attending the tournament is like a walk through a perfect mountain park. The parking at or near the fairgrounds leaves a little…or a lot to be desired, but we got lucky and found an alternative – and made some great new friends in the lot there. We already told them to expect us next year! It is a great July 4 weekend event!
Humble pie story: I will also share a little story about eating a big slice of humble pie and learning a big lesson on this trip. When we got to the Knoxville lot late Wed, I hooked up the electric, hooked up the sewer, and connected the water. Since I knew we would be working off the tanks in the bus for the weekend and I wanted to get an early start in the morning, I decided I would drain my fresh water tanks and top them off with good fresh water before I went to bed. So, feeling pretty resourceful and using my time wisely I drained them dry. I then walked over and turned on the water at the service connection. Huh…no water. So I checked the next valve…no water there either. So I checked a few more connections…NO WATER. UGGGGGHHH!! I’m a resourceful idiot! All of the water was off!! And no one to fix that at a University at midnight the day before a holiday…Rat Farts!! That was fun explaining to my wife and 3 teenagers…NOT! Guess who will never again drain any water before checking the water service…yup, that will be me. As a side note, the Marriott in Knoxville will rent rooms hourly for showers…sort of…if you beg, tell them you are an idiot, it’s your 20th anniversary, and you are a Lifetime Marriott Platinum member.

Great post Paul, that’s what this bus stuff is all about and happy 20th. Your family will probably remind you each year on your anniversary how they had to leave the comfort of the bus for a motel shower.:)

Paul as a reminder you can always run to the shop and fill up if you need water!

Water is usually available at a firestation 24/7.

where is this UT Knoxville RV parking? It sounds as if it has hook ups as well. We have parked once or twice at the convention center where there are probably a dozen powered spaces on the top of the parking deck.

I wish I could help with the answer. The only RV parking I am aware of is at the convention center where “tailgating” is the big thing.
