  • Going from 8 to 4 house batteries

Posted by John on December 16, 2025 at 8:39 pm

Our house batteries are overdue for replacement. At the same time, our goal is to reduce our front end weight on the steer tires by going from 8 4d batteries to only 4. Lithium just doesn’t make sense in our case, as we use our generator whenever the bus engine isn’t running and primarily run “pole to pole”. Attached is the current house battery schematic. Can someone who has done this successfully please weigh in with guidance? A special request to Don (lone star) who’s keen knowledge/insight we especially value. Thanks in advance! John/Linda

Lithium are cheaper, lighter and have way more energy available.

Thanks for the input. I reached out to Marathon directly and learned that they’ve done this before. As with most things, it’s not as simple as I had hoped. I’ll want to add a group 31 battery and isolator dedicated solely for generator use/charging.

Don, I’ll still be watching for a house for sale in your neighborhood…I want you for a neighbor!

John, did you ever get new house batteries?

    Hi Tom,

Yes, we did. After a lot of research (and consultation with knowledgeable sources), we decided that it was a little too complicated and best to take it to Marathon. We reduced from 8 to 4 house batteries, and had a group 31 and isolator installed for the generator. They did a great job. Thanks!

IMO with the battery technology of today there is never a use case for anything other than buying Lithium for your House batteries.
