  • GM auto 4wd transfer case stuck in neutral – solut

Posted by Chas on September 17, 2018 at 9:47 am

Ran into an issue after driving from florida to ATL then to SE of Raleigh this weekend.

Set my 2014 chevy silverado Z71 4WD for towing per the GM service bulletin. Got to the rv park in NC last night and unhooked this morning. Followed bulliten steps for detaching. Turned the key on and got a “service 4wd” message and wouldn’t shift out of nuetral.

Towed before and never had issues. I drove through a small storm (okay, was torrential rain all.the way through SC and NC along I85 and I40).

Internet search found replace transfer case shifter motor. Hmm, sounds expensive and time consuming while sitting in a CAT disaster area.

Little more.digging and found a service bulletin for.the exact scenario (dingy towing , stuck in neutral).

Fix is hook battery up, turn ignition to run (engine not started) remove 30 amp TREC fuse and put back in. Finish standard disconnect process as noted in towing bulletin. Shifts back to 2hi no problem.

Disconnect battery for @ 5 minutes to let Computer reset. My 08 suburban did the exact opposite of yours and that corrected the problem. It`s that stupid computer thing again!

Charles my 15 GMC Canyon did the same thing, to make it work again I pulled the relay for the transfer case and it started working again. We were in Utah and had a long way to go so I took it to the local GMC dealer and it just so happens this is a common problem. They said there was a service bulletin which just requires a reprogram and has worked ever since.
