Do the Glow plugs ever need replacing, when mine has been sitting I run the preheat for 20 seconds then crank, it spins a bit before it starts.

I would hazard a guess that the longer delay before starting is related to getting fuel into the injectors and cylinders.

If you want to test to verify this, before trying to start your generator after a long period without it running, power up the fuel pump and you will hear it pulse as it pumps fuel, the pulses will be slow initially and as fuel pressure to the engine increases the pulses will come rapidly.

Then try to start the generator and see if it fires faster than the delay you mention.

When I prime it I get volts to glow plugs and fuel pump runs but it doesn’t change pitch that much, the fuel pump is not original it is a black plastic pump that the 1st owner put on, I see on the Powertech web site they have a pump for all their diesel gens, I wonder if I should try a different pump?? I guess I could try checking pressure off pump? It is a low PSI pump, New pump says 5.5 to 9 PSI

Art, having recently had similar problems, I Replaced the fuel pump, found a pin hole in the fuel lines between the filter where it had rubbed against the block. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel line from the filters and engines. And still had problems, found a bad clamp that was letting a small amount of air in.

That sounds like when I put new pump on replace some fuel lines and clamps I like constant tension clamps.

When I have primed my generator engine I disconnected the plug at the fuel pump wiring and just powered the fuel pump. I did not initiate the start cycle or in effect pre-heat the glow plugs.
