Getting to Maine from the South
In two weeks I make the summer trip from Brooksville, FL to Trenton, ME so that Natalie can fly up and join me. I decided to renew my Good Sam membership as much for their online trip planner that can send the details to my GPS as I did for the park discounts. While using this tool I am having a problem up around NJ/NY because of height restriction warnings or even some roads that say “No RV’s” (I think this one was the Garden State Parkway).
How do you guys get up north when you come down here to visit?

If you are not sightseeing along the way, just let Google plan the route using interstates. If the drive is part of the vacation avoid the I-95 corridor and even NJ if possible by going north on 77 and 81 over to 84 and then to 95 via a section of the Mass Turnpike.
Bring money. They have tolls and they really know how to charge for fuel.

I usually would use Google, but they don’t take the height and such into account and they don’t export to my GPS.
I like the route you suggested, even though it adds 100+ miles to the trip. I don’t mind doing some sightseeing, but only Ian and I will be driving and I need to account for sleep and breaks too. Too much stress in mountains could be worse than traffic.

Ditto to what Jon said. Take 81 if you don’t have plans along 95. Even if you want to do 95 part way, take 95 to US-17N south of DC, to I-66W, I-81N. In fact, I would take this route anyway. It avoids DC and gets you past the hilly sections of I-81 further south.

Depending on your plans. I-95 up the coast to the NJ turnpike to Garden State Parkway to NJ 17 north to NY thruway (avoid Tappan Zee bridge/ under construction). Garden State Parkway allows RV’s and Busses as it is the main route for the tour busses to Atlantic City. The only concern is stay away from DC during rush hour. If I’m not travelling thru DC late at night, I take RT 50 thru Annapolis to Maryland and head north from there. Don’t let Jon scare you, the Garden State of NJ welcomes you as we need the toll revenue.

The garden state (small letters for a small state) is full of odors, narrow roads, drivers with attitudes, and some scary people. You have to buy protection. That is unless you have a cousin Vinnie.
But as a former Secaucus (pronounced see-caw-cus) resident I will admit NJ should be on everyone’s bucket list. Having said that I can tell you if you do opt to travel through the state you might want to at least learn how to tawk so da rezidents won’t try to take advantage of you. They’re tough and if you mess wit the guv he will shut down da road.
If you want to give the kids a view that cannot be duplicated anywhere, and which will amaze you, go to the boulevard in Weehawken, just north of the Lincoln Tunnel at night and sit in Alexander Hamilton park (where the duel was with Aaron Burr) and look across the Hudson at the NYC skyline. I have never seen a sight so awesome. If you have time, along the way there is an RV park in Jersey City that makes access to NYC pretty easy.

We live in NJ and have had our coach the entire lenght of the GSP, no problem HOWEVER when north of the NJ Tpk do NOT be in the extreme left or right lanes as overpasses are arched and if you are too far right or left it could be ugly.

Karl I have gone a number of different routes depending on stops along the way. 77 through Charlett NC can be real busy and than you have a mountain to climb before 81. I never travel 95 north if DC. I have gone 95,17 to 66 and than 81. This year I took 95,288 just south of Richmond to 64 ,81,84,90,495 than 95. I like 288 better than 17. Less lights. Best fuel price was VA 95 exit 4 in Skippers at Loves. Rick

Just be sure you dont pick up a new england or Joisey accent along the way, it seems to have a strange effect on Tom.

You know, I actually lived in NJ for a decade one year. South Joisey actually.
All of these suggestions are great. Thank you. It looks like 77, 81, 84 is the route we will take. If Natalie were with me and could spell some drive time I would click the little button that says “avoid highways” and see where we end up, but Ian is still only 14. I just had a great trip from home to Augusta, Ga using a back road. I much prefer to travel that way.

As Rick DeSilva is apt to agree south Joisey really isn’t Joisey. It’s more Philadelphia.
Joisey is definitely north of Princeton.
