Get bus from state to state
Hello – I’m a new member here, about to purchase my first Prevost coach to start a conversion. I could use some guidance and/or advice on the following; I live in South Carolina and have found a bus in Florida. The bus is still a “commercial” bus with all the seats, etc. I do not have a CDL, also will need to get it insured but cannot get comercial insurance. I need to get the bus to South Carolina to have it retitled as a Motor Home. Any suggestions on the best way I can get it to South Carolina legally are welcomed. Thanks!

Why are you bringing commercial into the equation? Unless you are under load and leased to the transport company you are not functioning as a commercial vechicle.
You are only transporting a bus that you own for conversion. Get a liability and if you prefer a physical damage policy to insure it for whatever value you want from your insurance company and drive.
You do not need a CDL to do that. You can probably purchase it for a one way transport.
Do not bring commercial vehicle into your wording with the insurance company, it doesn’t apply.

I would check with both states to see if they have a transport permit that allows you to move the coach. I believe most states do allow that.
Never again use the word bus. From now on always refer to it as an RV or motor home. It will make a huge difference in everything from the driver license you will need to insurance.

Note that you will probably not be able to register as an RV until the bus has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities. I believe self-converters often remove the seats and build some very rudimentary and temporary facilities so that they can be registered while they work on the build. Then they rip them out and build the nice interior. Check your state’s requirements for what constitues an RV or Motorhome in the vehicle code. Robert Glines on this site is probalby a good resource.

I’d remove any DOT / Tax stickers from its previous life. As suggested, throw in your sleeping bag, microwave, and one of those buckets with the “special lid” if the restroom has already been removed. Might not hurt to put a private coach sign in one of the side windows on the curb side. Especially if it is still has its previous livery colors. Good luck.

Hello, can you have them deliver the bus? The bus is commercial until the title is changed to a motor home. Have you done the math on doing a bus conversion?
