Genset Overheating
I have a 20 KW Powertech genset. This past weekend it shut down on us and the code flashing was high temp. I checked water/coolant mixture, added just a tad. let it cool and restarted. Verified the radiator cooling fan was blowing also. A few weeks ago the VDO analog temp gauge in the coach stopped working. Reading the manual it tells me that it shuts down on high temp at 230 degrees. We found a park and plugged up for the weekend. My “feeling” was that it could be a thermostat, waterpump (assuming diesels have one like a gas engine does)…or maybe just a case of not enough air circulating in the genset compartment. We have ran on this thing for days the past month trouble free…so we know it’s capable of dishing it out. This morning, after getting her home and back in the bus barn, I went out and fired it up opening all hatches to look at the various blowers related to it. The big blower mounted over the radiator is doing it’s job. There are also 2 smaller blowers mounted on the back of the compartment that appear to pull air in the compartment thru 4 “holes with deflectors” (for lack of a better term), in the floor in front and back of the actual genset. One of the blowers never came on. Going around to the other side and peering thru a small hatch (where the dump stuff and wash hose is located), I can look in and see these motors crammed in a tight space behind the radiator and big blower. my question is this…how in the heck do you gain access to these two motors (for those that may have replaced these in the past)…?? Dang…it’s not really complicated to make these repairs, it’s figuring out how to get to it in order to do it. Also while I’m on this topic. How do you replace the belt on the engine? Have not looked closely but it is right up against the right side of the compartment…I guess if you knew where to put the wrench or socket you could “feel” your way around? Thanks for the past input…it has been very helpful in me making various repairs to out coach…we are currently learning all about Xantrax inverters…what used to be intimidating, is now becoming “comfortable” to work on…It actually looks like a fellow would have to pull the entire genset compartment to replace some of this stuff…say it ain’t so 🙂 Oh yeah…I read in a post about a toggle for the motors AND a “watchdog”…where would this watchdog be located? I will look tomorrow when I return to the barn for the toggle in or on the control box…
