  • Generator will not start from inside.

Posted by Eric on May 8, 2018 at 11:17 pm

I have a 17,500 Power Tech in my 1995 Country Coach. Today the generator would not start from inside the coach. When I started the generator from the switch on the generator it would always start, but would shut down, sometimes within 5 minutes and at other times after 15 minutes. The fuel tank is full, I don’t have the auto start feature on, the oil pressure shows normal at the gauge, the temperature is normal, oil level is full, and the antifreeze in the overflow is normal. Any ideas? Thanks.

When it is running are you getting power into the coach? You could have anything like a oil pressure switch, coolant temp sensor also shutting it down…does it sound normal when it shuts down or does it slow down like it is running out of fuel….

Jeff, when I start it from the engine, I was able to put a heavy load on it and it ran well and produced power. It shuts down easily, just like I pushed the button to shut it off.

Don’t know but Sounds like my 15kw genset. Mine was a overheat issue. Would run until sensor shut it down. After having shop clean radiator, I R&R’ed blower and added 12 volt fan (pusher) in front of radiator, solved the overheat deal. My radiator is remote, beside gen set in another compartment.

I had a Coolant “Level” switch go bad on mine, did the same thing. The switch is mounted into the coolant tank where the radiator cap is. If that is it, make sure you don’t install the new one upside down.

Jerry … how do you know there is a rightside, upside, and wrong side?

Thanks for all the replies. What I don’t get is if it is a sensor problem, why will it run when it is started from the engine and at times run for 10 minutes. (it will always start from start switch on the generator). When I push the button inside the coach, the generator light illuminates and the preheat starts and then the light shuts off before it even attempts to start. Even when the generator is running from the engine mounted start switch, if I hit the on button inside the coach, the motor instantly shuts down. It seems if a sensor was bad, it would not start at all from either location?

I believe your coach uses a generator control unit that CC made. It is not available anymore and no one is working on them to my knowledge. That unit is probably failing. On most CCs it is behind a panel on the roadside of the 1st bay between bay 1 and 2. Yours may be elsewhere due to FP.

Just an update. I have good news and bad news. I let the batteries discharge enough so that the auto gen feature was activated and this started the generator and it ran without stopping. After shutting it down, the generator on button worked with several attempts and it has not shut down again. The good news it is working again, but the bad news is I have no idea why using the auto gen button has led everything to work again.

Shot in the dark, possibly a start toward a failure of the card in the ECC? My 94 would lose a function now and then, intermittent, before going out completely. Always fun to track down stuff that works part time.(-:

I’m pleased to report back that I have my generator system working again as designed. I traced the problem to the gencon generator auto start circuit board. Although these boards are no longer made, I was able to find a brand new one on ebay. I put it in today and everything is back to normal.

Dick, the coolant switch has a “float” arm, if it is installed upside down, the switch will not work. Don’t have a picture, but if you look at it, you can see what I’m talking about.

Jerry: Sounds like I should look very closely at the old one when I take it out. Thanks!
