I just assumed my 20 KW Kohler generator was in fact 20 KW. Actually, it’s 26.9 KW.

No, the engine is rated at that, the generator is only 20KW. You want the engine to have more power than required for the generator or the engine/generator will respond poorly to load increases.

It is common for engines sold internationally to be rated in KW.
You can convert that to HP which we are accustomed to seeing. As a very rough rule of thumb I double the KW hour rating to arrive at an approximate HP.

To convert kW to HP multiply by 1.34. I think you will find your 26.9 kW engine equals 36 HP.
Kilowatt hrs is not a measure of power but energy. The equivalent english unit is btu.
