Generator Stack
Posted by Kyle on September 9, 2014 at 9:26 pmI’m looking for a quick fix. Many football and NASCAR venues are now requiring a stack to vent generator exhaust above rooflines. Camco makes a cheap one for smaller RV’s with 2″ and smaller generator exhaust. Does anyone know of a kit for the larger exhaust pipe on a 20 kW Kohler? It looks to be 2-3/4″ diameter, miter cut on an angle; however at 2-3/4″ or 3″ extension should work.

I use the camco but I modified it with a 3″ elbow works great

Get on the Camping World site and look up the “Gen-Turi”. About $130.
Works for us at the track real well. -
We use the Gen-Turi as well, but had to use a PVC extention with a rubber connector at the top to get it above the roof of H3.

Use Gen turi kit and attach pvc coupling to shower suction cup for stability to top of roof line, attach pvc elbow coupling at top to direct exhaust flow… You can find these suction handles at Bed Bath & Beyond…

Thanks to all. Will do some surgery to the Gen-turi with PVC and a 3″ exhaust elbow.

I like the concept just a couple of questions…… Looks like the extension pipe and elbow is ABS, neither ABS or PVC do very well with heat, as I recall ABS can take a bit more heat than PVC but both get into trouble around 200 degrees. I would expect that hot exhaust gasses may well surpass that threshold. Second, most exhaust systems have a modicum of tuning, even a lowly generator, in order to properly extract the exhaust from the engine. Not sure if this system would make the cut but it would be something that I would certainly research, although for very short periods it would probably not damage anything. By no means to I profess to be an expert on this topic but a one size fits all product from Camping World makes me leery.

I have a GenTuri and like it. Due to the height of our coaches you will more than likely need the 18″ extension to get it past the roof line. You will for sure need it on an H3.
The concept is once the exhaust is past the steel elbow, the plastic pipe is of a largr diameter than the steel elbow and does not come into contact with elbow at all.
The plastic pipe attaches to the elbow with three straps. the concept is this setup creates a low pressure area and literly sucks the exhaust up the plastic pipe.
There is no concern for exhaust heat and the plastic pipe on most if not all Prevost conversions. our generators are normally located midship and the exhaust exits out the back of the bus so the heat disapation is good by the time it gets to the back bumper.

I agree with both points. If the exhaust stack entry and subsequent piping is larger than the ehaust tip on the motor coach the venturi effect is likely to have no impact on exhaust back pressure, and in fact may actually contribute to the flow as long as the extension diameter is larger its whole length.
With the venturi affect, even if the exhaust temperature at the tip is hot, a lot of fresh ambient temperqture air is drawn int the stack so the plastic stack is going to stay quite cool. Keep in mind however that if you use such an extension or stack to get the exhaust up higher than the coach, you need to verify the temperatures are safe and there is not a risk someone could get a burn or that the stack will not melt of ignite.

It’s the 90 degree elbows that may skew your thesis, of special concern is the one installed at the top of the pipe. I have accidently lit this ABS stuff ablaze (with a torch whilst sweating copper pipes nearby) and it is not a pretty sight and flares with absolutely no warning….black acrid smoke and puddles of burning molten plastic is not a pretty sight! I have a formula laying around somewhere that shows the delta in pressure with 90 degree turns in a pipe, it is significant (assuming the pipe is the same diameter). I would assume that the first 90 has to be equal to or greater in diameter than the exhaust pipe feeding otherwise it will backpressure the system. The second (consumer mounted) 90 may well disrupt the venturi effect set up by design…………

Our SOB has the generator’s exhaust pipe very close to the generator, therefore very little heat is dissipated before it reaches the GenTuri. The design of the GenTuri probably results in a 50% outside air inflow before it comes in contact with the PVC up pipe.
I have run the generator 4 days straight dry camping in summer heat with all the air conditioners keeping the generator loaded. At no time does the PVC have a problem with the temperature of the exhaust gas.
There is no need for a 90° elbow at the top. In fact, there is good reason not to have one. An elbow up there only causes a slight restriction in flow, without benefit.

Elbow at top serves two purposes, keeps the rain out of the exhaust pipe and directs soot away from your coach… These exhaust Pipes contain a fair amount of black soot that does take kindly when wet…

If the stack is a greater diameter than the generator exhaust tip and is positioned at the bottom to overlap but not contact the exhaust tip the flow of generator exhaust will pull fresh (cooler) air into the stack to mix with the generator exhaust and the larger diameter of the stack will not change the back pressure already present in the generator exhaust system
With the stack as described the top can be straight because even if rain enters it is not going to get into the generator exhaust. I would not want an elbow at the top because I would rather the exhaust continue to flow up rather than being directed sideways.

One time, in a steady rain, I had to go around the side of the coach to get something out of a bay, The generator was not running so any rain that entered the GenTuri could be seen dripping from the opening above the metal exhaust section. The PVC is bigger than the metal exhaust pipe and the drips were falling outside of the exhaust pipe opening.
I guess that if the generator was not running, the PVC pipe absolutely vertical, no wind, and a rain drop fell exactly in the center of the PVC pipe and did not contact the wall of the PVC, it theoretically could enter the exhaust pipe.
I’ve not experienced those conditions.
Even if that happens, the GenTuri attaches with a link pin that goes through a vertical set of holes in the exhaust pipe. That hole will act as a drain for minor amounts of water.
It really isn’t a big deal if you have an elbow at the top or not. It is not a disaster either way. Thousands and thousands of GenTuri users do not have an elbow and obviously those that do have not reported any problems either.
It’s a Ford or Chevy thing when the correct answer is MoPar.

Is the Gen-Turi still the way to go? I need an exhaust stack for some upcoming events.
