Generator Roof Radiator Fans
Question for your guys/gals: Our CC has a roof mounted generator radiator with two electric fans. Looking at the electrical diagrams, it seems that the fans run continuously whenever the generator is running. I believe this to be the case since the relays are triggered by the same signal as the generator hour meter. I’m considering replacing the 14 year old fans as they have 2,000 hours on them and obviously exposed to the elements. I do not have any problem with overheating. I’m looking at high quality fans that have the same dimensions and considering adding a Temperature-Controlled Fan Harness & Relay Kit. The kit would turn on the fan at 185°F and off at 170°F. My goal would be to reduce the wear on the fan and the ceiling/roof noise of the fan when dry camping. In the bedroom we can’t hear the generator but can hear the radiator fans.

Les, I would not add anything to that circuit as it only adds something to fail. If the fans don’t run, no generator. Go ahead and replace the fans if you think they should be done. That setup is the same as on my previous Legendary and I never had a fan issue, and don’t think Roger Foster has had any either…maybe he will chime in if he has had problems with the fans.
As to the noise…I bet if you have the a/c running, you don’t hear the generator fans, right?

Don’t mess with success Les. In fact, don’t fix it till it’s broke.
I have a strong suspicion a lot of research went into not only fan selection, but the engineering relating to those fans, their lifespan, amount of air that flows, resistance to environmental conditions, etc.
I recently replaced one of my two A/C condenser fans at the house. I think conservatively they run almost continuously 5 months of the year so it likely had 16,000 hours on it. The second one is still going. I not only don’t think 2,000 hours is a significant part of their life, I don’t think anything other than a direct replacement when necessary is required.

And most likely all the fan motors you can get now are made in China and with them it is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Ive had to change the fans on mine a few times it’s a real pain and if you have fans that are working don’t fix what ain’t broke. Just my two cents worth. Plus I’m not sure you can find fans as good as the one you have on it now.
