  • Generator Recommendations..

Posted by Richard on November 13, 2017 at 10:15 am

I have a Prevost H3-40….. I need to replace the generator… The One that was originally installed was a Power Tech PTSMH20 this one had an external radiator…. They no longer make this generator but said the replacement was a PTI-20-T4F with a radiator of 03FSBF.. Not sure if I should stay with Power Tech or Maybe go with Onan or another Manufacturer of Generators…. Please Advise.. Also if any one knows where to get a used generator this may be the path i want to pursue…

Just curious why the gen needs replacing. My 1995 Power Tech is running strong. Do the gen brushes need replacing, bearings maybe, or a much bigger problem?

For me, I would have a Power Tech over Onan any day. But then, as a good friend says, do what makes you happy.

    All the best.

If I understand the issues here, whatever changes are made have to consider the ability of the replacement radiator ….wherever it is placed….. to be cooled by transient air flow through the generator bay. At present, a remote radiator is in place. This system, by definition, has an air handler that sucks the air through the bay and passes it through the remote radiator thereby removing the heat from the engine coolant.

Therefore, it stands to reason you MAY not have an option that you seem to imply…..that of a self contained generator with the radiator on the generator. It is entirely possible that the remote radiator set up cannot be changed due to air flow issues, etc.

Just my thoughts. I do think Power Tech offers excellent tech support and would discuss this completely with them.

Was this air issue a part of the initial question? If not, I respectfully suggest it is a part of the answer to the whole issue of generator selection.

The Generator was either removed or stolen by/from previous owner…. The external radiator is still in place. I have the owners manual for the generator thats how I know what type was originally installed….If i could find a used PTSMH20 that would be best…

I wonder what was in Dan and Judy Hilger’s coach. That could be a perfect match.

    Rich,

My coach is equipped with a Martin Diesel generator that has operated pretty much flawlessly for the past 25 years.

The are located in Defiance Ohio and know our coach installations very well.

You might give Paul, Service Manager, a call and see what he can recommend for your needs.
