  • Generator Radiator Hose Leaking

Posted by Jerry on March 5, 2022 at 11:27 pm

Hey all my generator hose on the thermostat side (top of the engine) is leaking, not a large amount but need to replace it. I have the Powertech 20kw with the Kudoba engine, was just wondering if anyone has experience with this style unit. Radiator is located between the genset compartment and the battery compartment bay. Was wondering if I could get to it from the battery bay because its kinda tight behind the genset.

Jerry, we don’t have them same unit, rather a Martin Diesel generator with Yanmar engine. However, I believe our radiator is located in the same location. Unfortunately, unless you find a contortionist, it is extremely difficult to reach the radiator (through the hidden hatch behind the generator) and change the hoses. We went back to Martin Diesel (Defiance, OH) and they had just “the guy” to do the job. They are great to deal with. Good luck.

Yeah thanks John, it’s pretty tight back there. You need to be kinda small to fit, I’ll have to figure something out for sure.

Jerry, we had the same issue and ended up taking ours to Marathon in Dallas. They removed the storage areas above the house batteries and they were able to reach the radiator hoses from there. Very tight fit but was better than pulling generator.

Okay finally started on the generator radiator hoses, was able to get the battery bay upper storage area taken out. So for you Marathon folks that may want to take on replacing your hoses that may have the same setup I will document it for ya. The first picture will be the access area above the battery bay and then the radiator hose location where they penetrate the back wall to the generator bay. The last picture is the lower drain petcock where it has a line connected but it’s just about a 12 inch line that’s tucked behind the radiator. I should be able to connect my pneumatic oil drain unit to it and vac out the antifreeze. I’ll be starting on it bright and early Saturday.

All done with the genset hose replacements. It was fairly easy just takes a little time with draining and pulling out the old hoses then snaking the new ones thru to the radiator. Once I got them going it was pretty easy to push them thru. Pneumatic drain units come in handy for sure. Recommend owning one if you like to do your own maintenance. Re-filled the radiator before attaching the top hose and then filled the smaller tank on the genset, also I filled the top hose being it had a long way to travel that kept down the amount of air in the system I had to bleed. Tightened everything down and fired her up, bled the system and good to go.
