Generator Oil for Dummies
Just took the oil cap off thinking there would be a dipstick. None. Looking inside I don’t see any oil. And I don’t know if I should fill it up or not. ????

Your dipstick should be on the side of the generator. It will be a wire loop, maybe yellow or red. It should be on the lower portion, maybe around the fuel pump.
If you can’t find it I’ll see if I can get a photo of mine, but it might be different than yours depending on the make of generator.

Yellow loop just like you described. Nice clean oil filled to the top line.

I must be missing something here…how long have you owned that coach? You did not know how or where to check the oil in the generator before now???

As Jon has mentioned many times, Prevost owners fall into a couple of categories. The handy guys that either enjoy or don’t mind tinkering. And some like myself who pay to have experts who know what they’re doing for regular tasks. I have a northern shop and 3 southern Prevost specialists who I visit regular before most trips so I know everything is working properly.
i am no mechanic and have no interest in being one. I do love traveling and living in our Prevost. And if something happens, it’s safer for me to just call the guy to fix it.
And I’m a pole to pole guy 50 amp to 50 amp. This will be a first time for extended dry camping…and in the cold. Generator was serviced and only has a few hours on it.
I’m not proud of being automotive ignorant but it is what it is. Luckily there’s a great group here that don’t judge but here to help dummies like myself.

I know Mark is like me in the respect that it is hard for us to understand how some owners do not understand things we consider basic. But Jimmy gets points for asking his questions because he is far better off asking than possibly making a wrong assumption.
What troubles me is we have so many members who never ask questions. There is no such thing as a bad or dumb question because nobody who owns one of these coaches knows it all and all of us were completely overwhelmed when we got our first coach. Asking questions is how we learn. Those who ask are helping the hundreds who prefer to not ask.
Our seminars are greatly influenced by the questions and discussions on our forum, so everyone who seeks information should participate. We don’t know what we don’t know until someone starts the discussion with a comment or question.
And for those who are not mechanically competent, don’t feel bad or think you have to make excuses. Nobody that owns one of these coaches should feel they have to become a mechanic. What is important is to develop a basic understanding of operating the coach, and making sure those you select to maintain it are doing their job.

Don’t feel bad at all… there’s even people like me who KNOW how to do it…. but still get busy and don’t… sometimes, it takes an alarm for me to see the coolant is low! Although, I’ll always check the tires cuz that’s a big deal.
