  • Generator Fuel Average

Posted by Jessica on October 8, 2024 at 5:40 pm

Hey there community. As hurricane Milton barrels towards us in Land O Lakes, FL (just north of Tampa), I find myself wondering something I really should know the answer to. Alas, I need to poll the experts.

We have a 20kw generator on our 05 Thompson. On average, how much fuel will we consume per hour if we run it continuously?

my 17.5 burns .5 gallons per hour when not running the AC’s. When running all 3 AC units and charging the batteries it’s about .8-.9 gallons per hour.

The rule of thumb is 1/10 gal per hour for friction, internal losses, etc then 1/10 per hour per kw.

So if you average 8 kw load it would be .9 gph

I ran a 20KW for 170 hours after filling the bus fuel tank 2 miles away. At the end of the 170 hours I refueled at the same gas station at the same pump and took on 71 gallons. It was July weather in Oshkosh and I ran 2 A/C units continuously as well as refrigerator, water heater, and any other typical loads such as several hours of TV per day, the grill or cooktop, and phantom, loads.

That worked out to less than .5 GPH.

I have since rechecked consumption but on shorter periods of use at times when I could isolate refueling to just generator usage and the fuel burn stays around .5 GPH. Until your generator fuel consumption can be verified use higher consumption rates to be safe.

Thank you everyone for your knowledge! Even at 1 gph we should be fine – I hope… I will update everyone when we are through this.
