I know of two types. One is a stainless steel tube with a flexible formation that allows it to flex around the formation. The other more commonly used type is a tube made of a strip of material (steel, stainless, etc) wound to form a flexible tube.
The first configuration is claimed to be leak free and I suppose it is but I am not sure if its original intent was to be constantly flexed and straightened as it is in a generator application. The second configuration obviously will not hold air pressure because it is a spiral wrapped construction but it flexes readily and can be used with constant bending and straightening.
I have had the second configuration on all my coaches and so far so good, I have never had a need to replace any. In fact I cannot recall any problems with the spiral wrapped flex tubes ever, but the solid tube with a flexible formation is used on the turbo inlet tube on 8V92 engines and speaking from experience that part is a routine replacement and the price is breathtaking.
