Generator Double Start Fixed
Ever since we bought the coach, our generator required a double start. I remember the salesman’s claim “They all do that!”. I was pretty sure they did not all require a double start. Anyway, since oil pressure seemed fine it did not bother me too much.
Regardless how long one preheated or primed the fuel pump, the generator (20kW Powertech) would shut down immediately during the first start attempt. It would start fine at the second attempt.
Clearly one of the protection circuits felt something was amiss if the generator had not run in a while. I suspected either oil pressure or “AC present” missing.
Turns out our unit has two oil pressure senders. One low in front of the engine, the other hidden high in the rear of the block next to the starter. The one in front supplied the analog oil pressure gauge and was fine. The one in the back turned out to be the problem.
Oil pressure sender in front
The second oil pressure sender in the back just above the starter. On and around the sender there was a very fine oil mist. The membrane in the sender probably was shot. I shorted the sender and sure enough the generator started on the first try..
Ordered the replacement sender from Powertech. It is a standard Nason unit
Put the new sender in and the generator starts up on the first try. I should have done this earlier. It is nice not to have to double start and be able to use auto start from within the coach.
