Generator Coolant
My Kohler 20KW generator’s water temp is normally in the low 140’s or, if running a number of the A/C’s, maybe in the mid 150’s.
Yesterday we boondocked at a Walmart and it was 95 degrees! Of course we were in full sun, facing my generator, making it well into the 100’s. At times, I ran all four A/C’s and the generator coolant got up to 168 degrees. When I shut down two of the A/C’s I returned to the mid 150’s fairly quickly.
I took out the manual and noted the relief cap is rated at 160 degrees. Hmm … this morning when leaving I shut-down the generator and noted a had about an ounce of coolant on the bay floor that came out of the expansion tank hose. When cold, my expansion tank level is less than a quarter full.
Don’t know if anyone else on here has reached gen temps in the 160’s, but my question is do you change your coolant (like on your bus) every 24-months, or do you flush (per the manual) your coolant annually or every 500 hours?

The radiator caps are rated in pressure not temp. That being asaid, the radiatir cap is most likey bad. For 7 bucks replace it and see.

I agree with Mikee, replace the cap Tim. Mine runs pretty cool as well, but in the extreme heat you had going the temp sounds normal to me. May want to check the belt just to be sure it’s tight.

I use the same coolant and same flush schedule as engine.Flush schedule varies with coolant type.
