Generator Compartment Door
Posted by Larry & Diane on June 19, 2016 at 5:30 pmOur generator compartment door is insulated with some kind of spongy stuff that has begun to fall apart when touched… I would like to cover it with a flame retardent fire resistant cloth or something… it’s in pretty good shape if you don’t scrape it and It has some kind of cover that is coming apart. I think if I had the correct fabric it might be an easy fix.
Has anyone done this or replaced it all ? Would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks, Diane

That is a lead lined panel…..You will have to strip it all off and replace it…Many boats use something simiular for engine areas…AAP has some available as well

Dianne,
I scraped my old crumbling “foam type” insulation off completely and replaced it with a double lining of a silver insulation acquired at Home Depot. It is the same material used for front windshield shade blockages for automobiles. I used a spray glue after cutting the pieces to fit. It is quiet and effective.
It also cost less than $30 including a 12 foot roll of the insulation… a lot of which you will have left over for other purposes.I lined a lot of the generator bay with the insulation…. as well as the Webasto bay… got a lot quieter…

I would think you could also glue the 1″ hard insulation 4×8 sheets they use on the exterior of houses. Not only insulates but deadens sound as well.

Any material used in generator boxes should have two properties.
It should be an effective sound deadener. The lead layer between foam layers of varying density is a component in an engineered panel intended to minimize or prevent the passing of noise. As a rule of thumb the material used should have properties that absorb the full range of sounds generated by the motor.
The second requirement is the material should have properties that will not allow the spread of flames or fire. Within the generator box there is a combination of heat, electric components, fuel, and an ongoing supply of air from the circulation fan. That is bad enough if something should spark a fire, but to have an insulation material that feeds the fire is a recipe for disaster.
When some have redone the sound box insulation they have gone so far as to provide some form of fire suppression.

Jon,
Many brands of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) are fire retardant rated and contain HBCD. Don’t ask me to spell it…it’s very long! I’m still not sure this would be adequate for a generator compartment, but most “close foam insulation” contains fire retardant chemicals, just not sure the various levels of these retardants.
-
My point was if someone is going to reline a generator box to be aware that some materials may not have any retardent.
-
What ever I use will be Flame Retardent and Fire Resistant..
I will call AAP tomorrow and see what they have to offer.
Thanks.. Diane

Howdy Diane;
Please ley us know what AAP tells you. I am sure there are a lot of us interested in replacing ours as well.
Tim from Illinois should chime in here. He replaced the liner of his generator bay and did a beautiful job.
Thanks – Michael

Larry and Diane, I am having the same problem. Between the foam and the generator itself, mine has a sheet of plywood. In keeping with Jon’s comments, last time I checked, wood was not exactly fire resistant. However I do remember have having a heck of a time getting a fire started on my first camping trip. If your solution does the job please let us know. It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Suggest
Acoustiblok
for the sound deadening glued in place, covered with Thermablok aerogel for fire
rating, again glued in place. Each sheet is ¼ inch thick. Available Tampa, FL. Can be rolled up to ship. Cut with knifeFred

AAP is where I usually get mine from and it does a good job, price is also reasonable…

What I have used in the past is called Sound Down works great.

I would be very concerned about the issues Jon raised. We’re going to have Marathon replace the insulation on the door with what they use on the current coaches.
