Generator acting up!
Me again, went on 2000 miles trip, run generator all day no problem, next morning generator starter works but wont turn on! First couple tries it run with some black smoke but as soon as I released the togle button it died and now only the starter works, this is a Martin diesel generator 1990 Marathon, also my 110 heat does not work no light comes on ?!!! Next day we survived a night without heat at 15 degrees weather,batteries dead couldn’t start engine nor generator, charged batteries over 12 hours and everything other than the generator worked! Also my Webasto runs for 5 minutes and cuts off, i can do it over and over it will not run more than 5 min. the fan stays on but no heat! Thanks Hugo

Hugo, I don’t know specifics on your make generator. However, I have had a similar problem in the past and a couple of weeks ago. It sounds similar to mine in that the generator would turn over but not run. I changed the fuel filter and after doing that it fired right up. So if you can identify the fuel filter and get the part number from the existing element, go to NAPA and pick up a new fuel filter and change it out. That is where I would start. Just out of curiosity, do you know when the existing filter was installed and how many hours has the generator run on the existing filter? I place a label showing date changed out and hours total on the generator.

The Webasto sounds like a service issue. That vintage requires cleaning of the ‘eye’ that tells the brain that the fire is lit. Minor dissasembly is required to reach the eye. I believe there is also a service bulletin for your vintage recommending a different jet size be installed for better fuel atomization. If you’re servicing, that should be checked to see if it’s been changed.
Obviously, you must have generator running or be plugged in to 110 for 110 heat to work. ???

I assume you’ve turned on the 110v heat switch. There must be a circuit breaker for that system also, but I can’t remember where it is. Next step will probably get complicated. Sorry I can’t be of more help…fuzzy memory, I sold my 1990 Marathon in 2006. There are days I wish I hadn’t!
