Gen bay spray foam
Posted by Peter on January 11, 2014 at 5:23 pmWas just thinking about the spray yellow foam prevost uses on the underbody and on the inside , was thinking maybe it could be sprayed in gen bay on door, and walls you would never have to do it again, what are your guys thoughts???????

Anything used as sound deadener and insulation around the generator should have some fire protection properties and be capable of handling heat around 200 degrees. I just pulled that out of thin air, but I think the environment in the generator box or around the generator needs those properties.

Do you think that the spray foam has those things , I think you can get it with fire proof stuff mixed in , but I do not know , have some building with that sprayed on roof and side walls but , I am not sure of the other things!!!!! When they spray the foam on it comes out at high temp not sure how hot that it comes out at !!!!! Not that means anything!!!!!!!

Peter, Jon is right, consider materials that are heat / fire resistant. In other words they dont support combustion (fire/flame). The materials just melt or break down – (carbon out) at higher temps and dont support combustion. The typical basic spray foam will support combustion and its byproduct of combustion is hydrogen cyanide. I have not heard of a composite foam insulation that has fire resistive qualities. There is many spray on fire proofing materials that is use in the steel bldg. construction, protecting structural elements. That may work?
My coach, I utilised a high density recycled plastic material that came in 4’X8″ panels and cut / fit to size in my generator bay. The sound barrier distributer mentioned to me that is was fire proof ……. well its a plastic I thought. I took a sample home and placed a 100w bulb (400 degress) on the sample. It did melt over a period of time as suspected. Then took my propane torch and the material melted but did not ignite and supported combustion to the open flame.
That satisfied me for the application and purchased the material. I cut the material up and made up custom battens.
1/8″ thick led sheets, 2″ high density plastic material, and then the heat resistive silver cover (same material on fire walls in your vehicle).
Peter. Sound damping
When sound damping the generator bay, the most effective sound damping is the high density materials. This high density dampens the low thumps / vibration / base sound from your generator. Liberty placed the led sheeting under their foam acostic tiles. Save that stuff because, it is impossibly to find these days. Others use 1/4″ heavy rubber as their high density material, this is heavier that an good mud flap material.
Next layer; A lighter material that will absorb the mid to high sound ranges from your generator. Many types of materials on market such as acostic tiles. This will clean up the rest of the noise.
Keep in mind that the low noise is the noise that you hear inside the coach. Thats why I say its the most important part of sound proffing your generator bay is your high density material.
