I’ve been very happy with the Garmin 770 RV GPS. Yes, it’s not a good idea to use Waze when navigating a large motorhome as its algorithm is programmed to take you the fastest route based on current traffic conditions. It could easily route you down back roads or neighborhood streets in finding you the fastest route. So far, I’ve only had one route that was delivered by this unit that delivered a few pucker moments. But that route was passable with a Prevost, just a bit narrow and twisty when an alternate route would have been better.

My favorite feature of the 770 is the Elevation screen. When approaching a mountain area, a press of one button gives an inset image of the next 30 miles of terrain. This way you can see when an incline or drop is around the next bend and adjust your speed accordingly.

When you set it up you’ll be prompted to update the unit. Do not skip this step. It’s a good idea to update it every few months as Garmin does a pretty good job of keeping its maps current. The Garmin updates are free and that’s a good thing! But, hang onto the the Mini USB cable that came with the unit as, for some odd reason, the Garmin doesn’t like all USB cables.

Also, the screen resolution is excellent and easy to read.

I use a GPS, but I never ever trust one. Their accuracy and reliability is excellent, but I have never used one that did not try to lead me down an unsuitable road or along a route that was wrong at least once and in some cases a lot.

So before a trip into a new area I “drive” the trip using Google Earth. That way I not only know the route, I can go to street level and pick out landmarks to prepare me for turns, or to just show me a route I consider safe. I don’t waste my time looking at interstates, but when I get off them I look at the details of the route.

The few minutes it takes to get familiar with an area i have never driven has paid huge dividends by avoiding some really lousy roads, low bridges, weight limits or areas I just don’t want to take the coach. If along the way we like to plan to stop for meals I look closely at availability of parking for the bus, or things like one way streets that make access to where we want to be difficult.

I like the Garmin 770 RV GPS ok but I like CoPilot RV with a 10” iPad even better. I also like the off line maps. And I use Google Earth to show me what each of my stops looks like.

I check my GPS directions against an atlas and Dee follows along as we go. The few times I’ve gone wrong it’s not the GPS, it’s Dee… And no, She doesn’t read my posts.

Art, I bought a Garmin 785 DEZL LMT. This model has a dash cam built in. I started back in 2002 with a black & white Street Pilot then two more units from Garmin after that. They are good units and I have been pleased with most of the features. I think you’ll like the 770.
