Full timing
Thinking about going full time in our motor home. I am wondering from those who full time where they register their coach and why. Looking for low taxes (or no state income tax) and cheap car and coach registration. NOT looking to live in one state and register in another for tax relief.

I think most RV’ers that are looking to do that are doing the Montana LLC thing. If you dont live there, there are obvious caveats with your home state trying to find you and tax you. But if you are full timing and NOT a resident in any place longer than 180 days – then its fairly safe. There are some other states that are pretty close to as favorable as Montana, but thats the state that has kind of pioneered this thing. They have recently decided to tack on a larger fee than the original registrastion fee.
Bennett Law Group will handle all the paperwork for you if you need it. They are the largest group that does this although there are quite a few in Montana that will. They happened to be the most well known.

South Dakota has a deal where you spend one night in SD and you can get a permanent address, drivers license, vehicle registration, license plates, the works. You can contact Dakota Post and they can walk you through it as well as forward your mail if you wish.

We are registered in TX because FL did not have a similar setup in FL as they do now. The Escapees is a great group and I am OK with TX but FL is better. If you have owned the coach for 6 months or more you don’t have to pay any kind of sales tax to register in FL and the registration fees are very low. It costs me about $500 for TX and FL is something less than $200. SD, TX and FL all have no State income tax and all are very fulltimer friendly. I also like that no annual inspection is required in FL but it is in TX. The good news is that if you don’t happen to be in TX when an inspection is required you have a 1 year grace period. However, that means that you MUST have an inspection done in TX before your 2nd year or as soon as you arrive/pass-through TX.
So far, that’s worked out OK for us and it looks like I will have to take the grace period this year so I will have to be diligent about ensuring that I go to/ pass through TX next year.

We’ve got at least 6 vehicles , Car Trlr. Enclosed Trlr. All Tx title & plated at least one car , a pickup , both trailers have not visited Tx 4,5,6 years. They don’t care .do the renewal online , check the Out of state box. Tags show up in the P.O. box. Get the Vehicle inspected within 3 days of entering the state. Easy.

It’s just a quick safety inspection. It costs $7 and they just check that the lights all work and do a brake check by setting the parking brake and putting the coach in drive. If it doesn’t move it passes.
